As the sun edged above the horizon, Korvyne yawned. They walked all night without a break. Didn’t the Shadowed Hands ever get tired? He blinked against the morning light, and then froze in his tracks.
Just ahead of them, a beautiful lake sprawled across the land at the base of a ruined fortress. He stared at it in confusion. They couldn’t have been more than half a day’s travel away from Gnomefel, but he’d never seen this place before.
“Let’s stop here,” his companion said. “We have a long road ahead.”
The elf headed toward the fortress without a pause. Korvyne hurried after him. He better not ask where they were. It wouldn’t look good for the newest recruit of the Shadowed Hands to be so unobservant that he missed an entire lake and fortress practically on his doorstep.
They made a small fire, and Korvyne accepted the food his companion handed it to him. He ate it in a daze, distracted by how lost he felt.
And it wasn’t just that. His head was starting to feel funny…
Korvyne opened his eyes with a groan and rubbed his head. Where was he? Nearby, embers from a fire pit glowed faintly in the night.
The memory flooded back, and he sat straight up. Right, he was traveling with an elf on his way to meet the Shadowed Hands! They stopped at the strange fortress to eat, but he must have collapsed.
