Well, that first part escalated quickly. So I talked about how and why are we as a country like this. Plenty of reasons to be honest. Quoting Dave Chappelle, but changing just one word - "I've been doing these day what most Kosovars either don't have the money or the time to do. I have been thinking." And these thoughts have pushed me to new jaw-dropping conclusions, that I didn't think were among me and my people in the first place. I have decided to talk about the politics of my country on this second part of the series. I think it was Albert Einstein who said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." By this approach, insanity looks like our national pride. We have been choosing the same people as our leaders for over and over, without even turning our heads back to look and analyze what they have done. And they didn't do a good job. Well, maybe they did and I am part of this insanity, but lets take a look at the facts.
- The average salary of a citizen cannot cover the utilities and a decent living,
- The rate of interest is so high at the bank, makes loan sharks blush,
- We are ready for any kind of compromise, just so Europe can open it's borders to us and we can fly away (we still have
a visa regime), - We privatized and sold any public asset for amounts of money those assets generate in less than 6 months,
But last year, the president's son got to go on a vacation in Miami and Rio De Janeiro and the government says we are progressing . I don't know, maybe I am losing my mind.
To be honest this year has been by far the most interesting one. Don't get me wrong, last year was a blast. Not even bitcoin value raised more last year than the number of scandals in this small country. We have seen a high government official singlehandedly employ people in some of the highest positions in our publicly owned companies. Not only him, we discovered that his wife had an amazing taste on choosing where people should work and why. And we thought that a housewife was only to cook, clean and raise kids. But this year; this year we were witness of what I don't know what to call, either miracles or absurdities.
Ramush Haradinaj, a former leader of the KLA - Kosovo Liberation Army during the war in 1998-1999, is the current prime minister of the country. And let me tell you, in terms of weird and unpredictable behavior, this man makes Kanye West look like an amateur. I have personally seen this man meet with people and commissions, discuss about a border issue the country had with Montenegro, take a look at a map, take that map and throw it at the high commissioners face, call him gay, organize a protest to oppose what at-the-time government wanted to do with this border issue, make his political party part of a coalition which overthrew the government, go into elections, go out of that coalition, unite with the same party that was on power before they overthrew it, bring the exact same border issue in the parliament and try to convince the deputies it is good for the country. But the government say we are progressing.
Did we have someone who stood up against all this you might ask. Well we have, or I guess we had. There is a strong nationalist party in Kosovo called VETVENDOSJE. VETVENDOSJE means Self-determination in English. They don't seem so determined right now, let me tell you that. Being the most voted party in the elections last year, with a solid 28% of the votes, VETVENDOSJE had the highest number of deputies in the parliament, yet they weren't able to do something about the situation. And it got worse. They split up. Don't know how, when or where, but the only opposition our government had, was torn into a thousand pieces. Half of the party resigned from their functions in the party and managed to form a new group of deputies called the Indepedent Social- Democratic Deputies. Now this is where it gets fun. The two groups, VETVENDOSJE and the Indepedent Social- Democratic Deputies, which at time where the same group, are almost throwing rocks at each other. Instead of looking what they can do to improve the situation in the country, they are concentrated on exposing personal stuff of each other.
Another day in paradise
