The young man's story is really curious. He succumbs to the temptation to sell the gold and pearl necklace in the souk given his poor economic situation. But you should never sell something that is not yours, otherwise you will suffer the consequences. This is how our protagonist ended up losing his hand for confessing something that he did not do.
