According to history, both swallowed cyanide pills, after which Adolf still shot himself in the head to fasten his dead. Their remains were burnt in a garden. Till date only Hitler can account to why he committed suicide, but researchers always speculate.

Why didn't he just Escape?

Hitler’s officers warned him that the Russians were on their way and that it would only take them a day or two to take over the city. They persuade him to escape to a small town, but he chose to commit suicide instead. there are some theories that claims Hitler and Eva his wife managed to escaped to South America, where they continued living their lives with their children, but these theories were discarded by most historians and researchers. Hitler couldn't have escaped, i mean he was highly recognizable and by that time escaping through the thousands of Russian troops invading the country may have been close to impossible.

Hitler's principle 'death before dishonor' led him to suicide

One of the Nazi principles was that 'death was better than dishonor', which of course may have prompted Hitler to his own demise. Because i believe he might thought if he survived the capture, he'll be tried and charged for his crimes and wicked deed. And he may also have believed that a captain never abandons a sinking ship, which trying to escape should be a great dishonorable act.

According to history, Hitler was actually hiding in the bunker, he got a word that his fellow leader "Mussolini" was captured when trying to escape with his dear mistress and they both were shot to dead and their bodies hanged in town square so everybody could see. Maybe Hitler didn't want any of that to happen to him and his wife "Eva". Hitler wrote in his last will that he didn't want to become a shame for everyone to watch.
