Yes, unfortunately the condition is permanent. In SOME cases, the effects of Sudden Hearing Loss Syndrome can be reverse (at least somewhat) by immediately getting a systematic steroid like Prednisone.

In my case, the root cause was due to an infected gall bladder which had gone undetected by at least 7 different doctors over a 7-9 month period. My immune system was extremely riled up and attacked my vestibular nerve bundle which resulted in damage to my balance, hearing, and also caused some vision changes.

Because my immune syste, was riled up, I was having a wide variety of systematic issue and two of my doctors got into a pissing match over prescribing the prednisone when I first lost my hearing. MY gastroenterologist had me on a local steroid (and its unwise to take multiple steroid at once) and the ENT told me just to take the other steroid and come back in a month. The gastroenterologist argued that his steroid would not help my hearing. The ENT still refused to budge. I had to go find a new ENT and over a week had passed before I began the course of Prednisone which severely hampered possibility of success.

At any rate, I am still glad I ran the course of the steroid as I think it may have helped marginally or at least stopped the damage from being worse. Sudden Hearing Loss Syndrome is much more common than people know and can be caused by many things even taking too much Advil!

Ultimately, I was able to use a very powerful hearing aid in one ear, and the other ear had too little hearing and could not use a hearing aid, so I ended up getting a cochlear implant.
