The heart of man - My unforeseen journey

in #story7 years ago (edited)
Hey guys, hope you're all doing good?

It's been long i actually made a post for myself so today i'd be sharing a short story.

Yesterday was actually a day to remember. I went out with my friend to buy some things we actually needed to do a job, we didn't actually know the place we were going to since we were directed by someone.
We told the taxi driver to take us to a nearby village not far from our school (University of Uyo), he was like "Okay, i know the place it will cost you N1200 ($3.2)"
We replied "Okay fine, get us to that place since we didn't know the location."
He started the vehicle and kept driving forward, I and my friend engaged in various conversations as the journey was taking a whole lot of time.
Surprisingly to us, the cab driver stopped when he got to the end of the road with so much confusion and frustration on his face. His exact words were "E be like i don pass the place oh (We'd probably passed the village)."
We looked outside the taxi only to see us in a place surrounded with water, fishermen washing their nets and getting ready to go fishing, women and children running about with joy on their faces as they sold their fishes.
There were also boatmen who used their boats to deliver log of woods, i was really interested and inspired by how these people enjoyed what they were doing in an unpopular place, as an adventurous person, luckily my friend was one too. We wanted to see more, we wanted to go round and see how large and amazing this river looked.
I made a friend that day, his name was Edet. Edet was a young and very funny boy who understood english and the only person who was willing to show us round the place.

My friend Casidy (left) and my new friend Edet (Right).

While Edet took us on a tour he told about himself and his village, how beautiful his village (Calabar) was. He insisted we join him on his boat to go see his village but we had other things to do so we rejected his offer. He talked about how much he enjoyed the view and the number of fishes he got every day.

To Edet, that was his only source of income, the only life he is used to. Get on your boat, deliver some fishes or wood, get back home eat a fish soup.

To us, it was nothing more than an amazing sight, a tour or adventure. We were really happy at how these people were contented with everything they had because they've never been exposed to the real world. To them it's their world.

  • How far can man go to be successful?
  • Why do men want more?
  • What do you think about Edet?
I kept battling with these questions, i finally to conclusion that it depends on how desperate the person is, man can go extra miles to get what he wants. Ambition, desperation they are all factors to consider. We want more because no matter how good yiu are there is still some atoms of greed in you. I think Edet is hardworking but when he is exposed to the real world and what it has to offer he'd probably want more too.

Thanks for reading, drop your comments and thoughts about the questions.
