Hotel Monteleone.
historic French Quarter. So many hotels claim to be haunted – but one, in particular, boasts a LOT of ghosts: The Hotel Monteleone. Sitting at 214 Royal Street, the hotel is the only high-rise building in the interior of the French Quarter, and has become famous for its rotating carousel bar.
The hotel dates back to the 1880s, when Sicilian immigrant Antonio Monteleone moved to New Orleans and set up shop on the site as a cobbler. He ended up taking over the nearby hotel and expanding his business, and the enterprise has continued to grow ever since.
Generations of hotel guests and staff have regularly experienced haunted events that would cause even the staunchest skeptic to take pause. This haunted hotel in New Orleans had a restaurant door that opens almost every evening and then closes again, even though it is locked. An elevator that stops on the wrong floor,
a man named William “Red” Wildemere, who died inside the hotel of natural causes. Another spirit is that of a friendly toddler named Maurice Begere. The boy died in the hotel, and his distraught parents returned frequently in hopes he might visit them. Maurice eventually appeared to his mother and comforted her, and to this day, guests report seeing him near the room where he died.
leading a curious couple down a hallway that grows chilly and reveals the ghostly images of children playing.
14th floor (must have been a popular floor for families throughout the years):
The entity of a lost little girl has appeared in front of the living, taken their hands, asked for help, looked into their eyes and then disappeared into thin air.
The entity of a 3 year old boy, thought to be Maurice, wanders in the rooms, looking for his parents. He has a friendly, hopeful countenance as he appears in front of guests, and then disappears.
Entities of various children have been seen running around and playing in the hallway, that had become freezing cold in temperature
In March 2003, the International Society of Paranormal Research spent several days at Hotel Monteleone. While at the hotel, the team made contact with more than a dozen earthbound entities.
For generations, near on a century, guests of the Hotel Monteleone have reported spotting ghosts or experiencing strange things during their stay at the hotel. And it's no wonder, right? The hotel is over a hundred years old, and with 600 guestrooms, the number of people coming and going is tremendously high. It would be even stranger if a hotel that old didn't have any ghosts still lingering around.
According to the employees of the hotel, however, none of the ghosts who still inhabit the property are aggressive or angry. Having spoken at length with paranormal investigators who have completed overnight stays at the hotel, Kent Wasmuth feels secure in the fact that any ghosts still residing at the hotel are friendly in nature. Thankfully, he adds, "there are not any aggressive or mysterious happenings that would want to cause any harm." Which is sort of a nice change of pace in a world where people staying in haunted buildings are sometimes pushed down stairs or experience other aggressive energy directed toward them.
(I don't know about you, but I like the idea of some friendly, welcoming spirits. After all, a hotel is meant to be your home away from home during vacation. Fortunately, the ghosts of the Hotel Monteleone are more likely to greet you with an incorporeal hug than anything else).
