The Wall of Time tells us the story of a man that falls in love with a spirited and beautiful woman. Evan is a shady character that doesn't come from the best side of town and doesn't seem to do much more then drugs, drink and get into trouble. Temperance (the woman he falls in love with) is from a well to do family, that have raised her with morals and a sense of refinement and dignity. But despite their differences, they find each other enchanting and against all odds are more then perfect for each other. There's just one problem, Evan has fallen in love with a girl from the past and there is no hope for them to have a future together. For you see Temperance died more then 100 years ago. This is how Evan's story begins.
Evan opened his eyes to the same insect littered window sill of his shitty apartment again. As his eyes came into focus he thought about the day he had ahead of him. He would go to work for his uncle again doing shitty road construction work hating it the whole time, come home, change, maybe take a shower, and then off to the bar he would go. That was the best part of the day because he would be able to look down the shirt of the bartender, Kelly, while drinking a cold beer. It wouldn't be much longer and he would have her in his bed. A smile crossed his face as he slung the dirty blanket off of himself to get up. As he stood he had the sudden urge to pee and ran to the bathroom. The bathroom was disgusting, dirty clothes riddled the floor, there was a black ring around the base of the bathtub, toothpaste somehow clung to the door of the sink cabinet, and there was a thick crust around the faucet that had a sickening smell. The toilet however was the worst, the inside of the bowel was speckled with poop from two weeks before when he had had the shits, and there was dried vomit that when fresh had ran down the side of it. He carelessly relieved himself missing a few times getting piss on the side of the bathtub and wall. Using his unwashed hand that he had held himself with ran his fingers through his greasy hair while examining his face in the mirror. Deciding that he was presentable for work as he was, he walked back into his bedroom picking up a dirty pair of pants and pulled them on. Evan was a rather nice looking guy when he wanted to be. His jaw was squared with high cheek bones and his nose was slightly pointed. He was tall with a handsome physic and raven black hair. His eyes however were his best feature, for they were the most beautiful shade of blue you had ever seen. He rummaged through a pile of dirty clothes in one corner of the room in search of a shirt. Without a second thought to check the shirt for any spots he pulled one over his head as he walked through the living room into the kitchen. The kitchen was in no better shape then the rest of the place. Dirty dishes were scattered from one side of the counter to the other. He caught wind of a rank smell coming from the sink and although he was hungry he turned and exited as quickly as he had entered. No longer hungry he changed his focus to having a cigarette. Knowing he didn't have any of his own, Evan, grabbed his keys and left leaving the door unlocked. As he walked down the hallway of the apartment complex, he searched carelessly through the ashtrays of his neighbors. Suddenly he heard the dreaded sound of the building manager stubble in from somewhere outside. Evan's rent was passed due and he had hoped to slip out again without seeing Bob. As he turned the corner he noticed that Bob was drunk again. "Hey brother", Bob said, " You going to have some money for me today?" Evan was an opportunist and he could see that in this moment he had the upper hand. "You don't remember dude, I gave it to you last night. I told you not to loose it dude, it was the full amount and the late fee." Bob swayed a bit looking as though he was trying to focus on the memory that never took place. "Oh yeah yeah, I got it... No worries no worries." Bob slumped himself against the wall so he wouldn't fall over. "Ok good man, don't scare me like that. I still need that receipt, you said you would have it for me this morning before I took off for work." Evan's pride in himself for get out of paying once again wasn't noticeable. Bob tried to stand up without the wall for support and fell back against it again. "Yeah yeah, give me to the end of today and I will get that for ya." Evan made a disappointed face, "Oh okay, we'll thanks man. Have a good day." And before Bob could say another word to him, Evan was out the front door headed for the car. "What a dip shit," Evan said smiling as he climbed into his small pickup.
Evan pulled into his uncles drive way and turned the truck off. Tommy, Jake, and Mike were standing together smoking as they waited for uncle Jack. "Hey, one of you fuckers got a smoke?", Evan asked grinning. "Yeah man." Jake carelessly tossed the pack he was holding to him. "What the fuck took you so long?" Mike looked pissed off, but then again he always did. "That mother fucker Bob wanted rent again, but I got out of it." Evan smiled wide and they all laughed knowing exactly what happened. "Dude, come on. Let's go do these lines before Jack's ready to leave." Tommy's head bobbed up and down. The four of them walked a ways into the yard turning at the corner of the house. Jake walked into the shed first as the rest followed shutting the door behind them. "Where did you get your shit?" asked Tommy. "Johnny crack pipe." said Mike. "What the fuck man, you know that mother fucker only got bunk shit." said Jake. "Na man, he told me this shits good this time," Mike wasn't one to side with anyone, he chopped up four equal lines on a small mirror and snorted the first one. Jake went next and the Evan. Tommy's head bobbed up and down again as he talked "Hey, hey man anyone gotta pipe?" "No, mother fucker, just do the fuckin line like the rest of us." Jake couldn't stand Tommy but he stayed civil with him because of uncle Jack. Tommy bobbed his head and made a weaving motion with his body as he stepped over to the work bench. He took his line and Mike picked up the mirror and stashed it behind some tool boxes in the corner. As they opened the shed door they could hear the sound of uncle Jack's pickup start. The four of them hurried to the truck knowing that uncle Jack wasn't one to mess with once he was ready to go. As they piled into the pickup, Evan noticed that even though it was light outside the sun still hadn't come up yet.
It was the middle of summer and Evan anticipated another hot day. As uncle Jack turned into the gas station Evan was reminded once again that he was broke. "Uncle Jack, could I take another draw off my check for like $50.00 bucks?" Evan gave his uncle a look of desperation since he had already asked for $100.00 last week. Without a word uncle Jack reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. Uncle Jack was a family man and no one would ever go without as long as he was around. He handed Evan a $50 bill and replaced his wallet. As he chewed on the end of his cigar, uncle Jack grunted and got out if the pickup, Evan turned to follow. The other guys were standing outside of the pickup, "I swear to fucking God dude, you're a mother fucker!" Jake hated it whenever Evan asked for extra money because he knew like the rest of them that uncle Jack would forget and Evan would end up with full pay. "Hey it ain't my fault he don't remember shit." Evan said with intended conviction in his voice. After their sandwiches were finished being made and paid for they were once again on the road to the job sight. They were working on developing a lot in town for a wealthy man that had bought it to build a house there. They were finished clearing the blackberry bushes and small trees that were in the way. Today they would be leveling the lot and hauling the extra dirt away. Evan had heard his uncle say that over one hundred years ago a very large house stood there but as luck would have it the house had burned down. Evan wished he had a metal detector, but he didn't and didn't know anyone that did.
