Those who forget the past...

What is it about the first love of our life that we can never seem to let go of? We carry a little piece of every person that we are truly intimate with. Baggage. It's more than some vague sense of nostalgia, but a concrete weight that we carry. It ties us to the past and at times threatens to drown us. However, I have always been of the opinion that it is from this experience that we draw from when determining the rest of our love life. Mistakes and all.

He cheated on her. He doesn't know why, but it was a mistake. He knows that much. Now he's begging her not to leave. This is the conversation going on two and a half feet away from me. Most of the time when something like this is going on, I play deaf. People tend not to notice bartenders, and the last thing I want is involvement. Marriage counseling, or worse yet taking sides is definitely NOT in my job description. I've always had trouble drowning out conversations. Then he let just a little of the macho anger slip. "If you were really committed to 'Us' you would give me another chance". My head snapped around fast enough to pull a muscle, I couldn't believe what I had just heard. The problem is the prick saw me and decides to get offended. I truly hope some day soon somebody will come up with some new profanity. The stuff we have is getting old. Luckily some of his friends were at another table and helped get him out the door before it got out of hand.

The girl used my phone to call a sister to come pick her up. I bought her a drink while she waited. It turns out that they were high school sweet hearts. Even though he cheated on her, she can't make herself stop loving him. Can't force herself to walk all the way out of his life. Too many good times.
