Teuku Umar who was born in Meulaboh Aceh Barat in 1854, was the son of a Uleebalang named Teuku Achmad Mahmud from a marriage with the sister of King Meulaboh. Umar had two sisters and three brothers.
Umar's ancestor was Datuk Makhudum Sati from Minangkabau. He is a descendant of Rear Admiral Nanta who was a representative of the Aceh Sultanate during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda in Pariaman.
One of the descendants of Datuk Makhudum Sati had merit against the Sultan of Aceh, who at that time was threatened by a Sagi Commander who wanted to seize power. Thanks to his services, the person was appointed as Uleebalang VI Mukim with Teuku Nan Ranceh. Teuku Nan Ranceh has two sons Teuku Nanta Setia and Teuku Ahmad Mahmud. After Teuku Nan Ranceh's death, Teuku Nanta Setia replaced his father's position as Uleebalang VI Mukim.
Little Teuku Umar is known as a bright, brave, and sometimes belligerent boy with his peers. He also has a hard nature and never give up in the face of all problems. Teuku Umar never gained formal education. Nevertheless, he is capable of being a strong, intelligent, and brave leader.
