Mr.Paul said that Thomas should practice magic with the help of his magic ring, which the dragon boy had handed over to him a while back. So, once he was settled in his room at his parents' house, he took it out, opened the magic book, and started practicing spells.
At first, Thomas was able to do simple stuff like turning the tablecloth blue, drawing fairies on his wall, and so on. He turned to the next chapter in the book and started reading about a spell that could take him where he wanted without using the usual book door.
Thomas loved beaches. So, he took his ring and put it on and studied the spell carefully and closed his eyes and waved his hand, and muttered the spell and found himself in Goa, India. He was stunned. It had taken him under a second to reach Goa. He took a minute to soak the scene in and then decided to buy something from a local store to prove to the others that he had been there. A fridge magnet seemed a good idea, and he bought a few and also some local delicacies. He had put his hand into his pocket and had wished for some rupees, which were the local currency, and it had appeared in place of the money he had there previously.
He walked for a while, admiring the scene, and then, when he was alone, muttered the spell and reached back in his room to find his family waiting there anxiously. He gave them all the gifts he had bought, and they were pleased that he was making progress. Meanwhile, Blessy, his mother, said that Thomas should rest and try out magic the next day. She was worried that he was working too hard. She took him to the kitchen and gave him delicious goodies to eat and then asked him to visit the playroom that she had built for him. She was afraid to send him outside to play. Thomas went off to play indoors.
The next day, Thomas told his family that he and Mary would be going to find the dragon boy. Sheila wanted to go too, but Mary forbade it because the librarian might recognise her. Thomas disguised himself, and they were ready to go. He learnt the spell to carry heavy loads and then wished for them both to reach the dragon boy.
Mary and Thomas reached the dragon boy's house, but suddenly, they heard screams for help coming from inside the house. Thomas sensed that the dragon boy was in trouble. He signalled Mary to be quiet and uttered a spell, and lo, they became invisible. They then entered the house and saw that the dragon boy was tied up and two hefty men were guarding him. No one else was around. His dragon was caged and its mouth tied up.
Thomas went to the kitchen and was quick to prepare a magic potion with the help of some local ingredients. Mary looked on as the ingredients appeared to move by themselves. They could not see each other either. Thomas asked Mary to pour the potion on the men. She was afraid but did it anyway. As soon as the potion was poured on them, the men dozed off and fell. Thomas and Mary appeared before the dragon boy and freed him and the dragon. They then tied the men up, and Thomas asked the boy to pack the dragon food because they would be taking the dragon back with them. The boy agreed, and then they all stood touching Thomas, who uttered the spell, and the next instant they were back in the backyard of Mr.Paul's house, where they kept the dragon.
