The small boy walked into the bookshop alone. The young lady at the counter looked at him for a brief moment and wondered why he was alone. Maybe his parent or guardian was outside the shop talking to some friend, she thought.
The boy wandered off, probably searching for books for children. She did not give it much thought. Her shop was small, and the boy would be safe. Suddenly, she saw a light emanating from behind one of the bookshelves. Was it a torchlight? She decided to check it out, and by the time she came to the shelf, she saw an open book with light coming from a page. It was a strong white light, and an ordinary light bulb would be pale in comparison. The boy was nowhere to be seen. He must have run off or probably hiding somewhere after being frightened by the light.
She called out for him, but no one answered. She decided to shut the book and walk back to the counter. All of a sudden, the boy jumped out of the book, and he was wearing a horned helmet that had small wings. He was crying and asked her to help him. She was startled, and it took all her strength not to faint.
The boy ran to her and hugged her tight. The army is after me. She did not know what to say. She shut the book and put it inside a cover, and stored it in the back room. Then she told him not to worry. She took him to the counter and made him sit on the chair, and gave him a cookie. He ate it, and she slowly asked him to tell her all that happened.
He told her that he had a magical power that allowed him to go into books and see for himself the story in real time. His parents had been magical folks, but disappeared one day. So, he was searching for them by reading books about magical lands and such. Usually, no one minded him and he got away in time. This time, he had worn a helmet that resembled a famous character who opposed the Romans, and the army tried to capture him. The bookshop clerk who was also the owner listened keenly. She asked him to give her a photograph of his parents and asked about his stay and other details. He said that he was staying with a kind neighbour, but he did not want to bother her as he feared for her safety.
The bookshop owner asked if he would stay with her, and if so, she would also join his search, and they both could travel the book lands and search for his parents. He agreed, and she arranged with the neighbour for him to stay with her during the holidays.
Thus began the adventure of searching for the parents of the boy. The boy was pleased and thanked her. He also said that he would help her with small chores in the bookshop.
