Lycanthrope Sightings

While walking through the forest, I held my crossbow in my hand. I preferred not to, but I learned long ago not to trust a bow and arrow when there were werewolves around.

I was out here trying to locate werewolves. I do hazard control for the local town, and since the increase in lycanthrope sightings and attacks, I've been asked to start tracking them. I have to kill them, because it is my job to protect. That's why I am a werewolf slayer.

While walking through the forest, I noticed some movement in the bushes nearby. I could see little bits of fur from the bushes and a dark, pointed, furry ear. I walked closer, and there he was, huddled in one of the bushes.

"What are you doing?" I called to him.

"You'll need to leave me alone. I'm hiding from you," he said with a deep, gruff, growl.

"Who are you hiding from?" I asked again.

"The pack...," he said, crouching low. I never liked liars.

"You must do what they order. You don't have a choice," I said.

"No! No! I won't leave my pack! They need me here. I'll never leave," he replied .

I made my way over to the man, standing in front of him, and looked him in the eyes. "What's your name?"

"Bev. It's Bev," he replied.

"Well, Bev, you can hide from the pack, but don't lie to me when I ask about them," I said.

"I'm not lying. You know I'm telling the truth."

"What are you doing out here, Bev?" I asked again, trying to not get too angry.

"I'm hunting, what else? I'm a member of the pack, you know. We hunt."

"So what are you hunting?"

"A bunny, just like every other day," he said, standing up.

"No, Bev, you're hunting people. I can see it in your eyes. You look like you want to kill someone," I said, reaching out my arm to steady him.

"I can't help it. I just have to kill," he said, backing away from me and clawing at the bushes.

"Bev, can you be honest with me? Why are you here?"

"I told you, I'm hunting for my pack."

"When was the last time you ate?" I asked.

"Yesterday. Why? Is that all you ever think of? Food, and when did you get so smart?" he asked .

"Where's your pack?" I asked again.

"I don't know. Out hunting for me, I suppose?" he replied.

"Why don't you go home, Bev?" I asked, so surprised at his intelligence. Really, I should have guessed that was the case. I just never thought he'd survive long enough for me to ask about him. I guess time has a way of taking all things. "How's your strength?" I asked.

"My what?"

"Your strength..." I asked again, a little bit annoyed.

"I have no idea. Why are you asking?" he asked, his doubt coming through his voice. "Are you trying to figure out how to kill me?" he asked, his growl growing just a bit louder.

"Well, I need to see what my competition is like, don't I?" I asked, reaching out my hand to touch him. It was growls, screams, and arguments all the way up the hill, but eventually, I was able to get Bev to the foot of my home. I locked him in a cage that is in the barn, but he is allowed to roam freely. No one accidentally opens the door. This is for my safety, and for Bev's. I'm not much for cross training my dogs, but there is a definite pack mentality that can be instilled in them. I'm not worried about this.

I restrained Bev and took him home. I didn't do much with him besides setting him in the cage and telling him to wait there. I figured he'd be alright. I went inside, got cleaned up, dressed, and sat down for a bite to eat. I heard a cracking noise from the barn, but since Bev was still in his cage, I figured it was a dog. I heard a shriek, and I stood up and walked closer. I had an odd look on my face, not knowing for sure what I was seeing. I let out a scream, then uttering some of the most un-cuss like words I could ever think of.

I closed and locked the barn door as soon as I could, then I locked all the doors of my house. I went upstairs and retrieved my crossbow. I went back downstairs and through my entire house, making sure everything was locked. I finally dropped down in my chair and held my head in my hands. I decided I was going to have to kill Bev before he killed me. This was going to be the hardest thing I've ever done.
