Best known as a Mausoleum!
It originated from the fact that Emperor Shan Jahan built it to house the tomb of his wife.
Taj Mahal is an architectural marvel of even the modern world.
It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughai emperor Shan Jahan as a house for the tomb of his beloved wife.
This great Wonder was constructed over a 20 year period on the southern bank of Yamuna River in Agra India. It stands out as the most outstanding examples of Mughai architecture.
I wouldn't forget to mention the architect behind this great wonder, Ahmed Ustad and Ustad Isa.
Just as our previous Wonder was named a UNESCO world Heritage site, Taj Mahal was also named in 1983.
Facts about This great wonder.
- Taj Mahal is built of shimmering white marble that seems to change color depending on the daylight.
- It was named Taj Mahal to honour Mumtaz Mahal.
- It was built with semi-precious stones and white marbles which forms the design technique called pietra dura.
- The dome at the center is 240ft tall and it is surrounded by four smaller ones.
- Inside the Taj Mahal is an octagonal marble chamber that has carvings with semi precious stones that covers the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal.
- For the other parts of Taj Mahal, it has a gateway of red sandstones mosque with a similar building know as a jawab or the mirror.
A story emerged that Shan Jahan wated to build another grand Mausoleum across the Yamuna River From Taj Mahal, so that when he dies, he will be buried there and that the new structure would have been connected by a bridge.
Also,
According to one gruesome (and most likely sensational) story, Shah Jahan had his minions cut off the hands of the Taj Mahal's architect and his workers after the structure was completed, ensuring they would never build another of its kind.
That will be all for the 5th Wonder.
