The NBA began in the 1979-1980 season to reward the players who had been the most important game of the week and full months.
Both awards at the same time in order that players receive partial awards beyond the prizes awarded at the end of season MVP type were created, the best Quintets season, Rookie of the year ... etc.
These awards besides being a recognition of the most outstanding player of the week also served to increase competitiveness among all and recognize the efforts of the best periodically.
Initially both types of awards were presented uniquely among players of both conferences, ie until 2001 Award Player of the Week and Month Award Player of the NBA not divided by conferences.
From the 2001-2002 season Prizes began to be awarded for each conference which was obviously made easier to access them.
They went from being the awards for best player of the Week and Month NBA to be the players of the Week and Month in the Western Conference and East respectively but before that time arrived the two men who were the pioneers of both Awards .

On October 21, 1979 Julius Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers became the first player ever to be named player of the week in the NBA
On the other hand in November 1979 Moses Malone Houston Rockets became the first player of the Month league history.
Both players began their career in the ABA and when they reached the NBA succeeded very quickly for their high quality becoming both MVP season in those years.
His greatest success came in 1983 when both already together in the Philadelphia 76ers won the Champions ring sweeping the Lakers by a convincing 4-0.
Both awards have the honor of being "minted" by some of the biggest league of all time.
