THE SHIP WALKING ON LAND
Source
Once upon a time, there was a very unhappy king. Yet he was as rich as the sea. His daughter was beautiful as the day, and wise as a saint.
Night and day the king thought:
“I need a ship, a Ship walking on land."
Unfortunately, no one in the world was in a position to give him satisfaction.
Finally, the king had drums drummed in all the towns and villages of his country:
“Ran plan plan ran plan plan ran plan plan. You are all informed that the king will give his daughter in marriage, with seven hundred farms as a dowry, to the man who will present him with a Ship sailing on land."
At that time there lived, with her three sons, a poor old widow.
“Mother,” said the eldest of the three sons, “you have heard. Tomorrow I want to go looking for the ship, the Ship walking on land."
The next day, at dawn, the eldest left, staff in hand, a small loaf of black bread in his bag.
At ten o'clock in the morning, he sat down to eat lunch on the edge of a fountain. At this moment, a poor man happened to pass by.
“Young man, I am hungry. For the love of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary, give me a piece of your little loaf of black bread."
"Poor man, go your way. I don't have much to eat for me."
"Young man, where are you going?"
The boy shrugged his shoulders in contempt.
“I am my nose. My ass is chasing it."
"Young man, I speak to you honestly. Do like I do."
"Well, poor man, I'm going to get some goads."
"Goads you will find."
The young man finished his little loaf of black bread and left. At sunset, he stopped, starving, on the threshold of a farm.
“A piece of bread, sharecropper, please, for the love of God and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pater noster…
"Get away, lazy person."
And he threw his goad at him.
The young man picked it up.
“It’s still something to keep."
And he left again.
For a hundred days, the unfortunate man wandered the world, drinking from fountains, and eating herbs and wild fruits. When he stopped, starving, on the threshold of some farm to ask for alms, the tenant immediately shouted to him:
“Get away, lazy person."
And he threw his goad at him.
The young man picked it up.
“It’s still something to keep."
By the hundredth day, the boy had collected a hundred goads. But he hadn't found what he was looking for.
Finally, the unfortunate man returned to his mother.
"Well! My son, have you found the ship, the Ship walking on land?"
"Mother, I only found these hundred goads. Now I'm done traveling."

Previous Tale: The Little Lady
Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.
I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.
Once again, we have a king who would sell his beautiful daughter for one of his passions.
And once again we have a mother with three sons. The first one is not succeeding in the quest. We all know how this will end, right?
Yesterday morning, we went to a "Christmas market", where you can buy presents for your family and friends.
There is also entertainment for everybody. The two grandsons of Kati enjoyed the petting zoo, where they were goats, sheep, piglets, and rabbits.
Kati bought a beautiful dish imported from Tunisia, and I bought a pair of very good socks for my grandson Nathaneil.
And, in the afternoon, we went back to the same playground.
It was a good day!

The Ship Walking On Land must have been something very important to the King since he was ready to give his daughter in marriage with an enormous dowry to whomsoever would provide him with it. But I wonder what he going to do with such a ship, I guess that will be revealed in the next chapter of the story. One of the sons of the poor widow had a golden chance to get the Ship Walking On Land by just feeding that poor man. I believe the poor man has the powers that would have made that possible. This tells us the importance of helping strangers because a stranger we help today can be our savior tomorrow. The other sons of the poor widow still have a chance to get the ship for the King. I belive each
of the brothers will meet the same old man and he will ask for their help. It might be the last son who will finally help the poor man and get the ship walking on land and marry the princess.
Thanks for this interesting tale.
No doubt you had a great day today spending time with your loved ones. I'm sure you purchased great items at the Christmas shop. Also the time spent at the playground must have been very refreshing. I'm genuinely happy for you, @vcelier.
Goodbye and God bless you and your family.
Yes, no doubt, it was a good day <3 you visited the market and bought socks for your grandson, and also kids get to play with goats and other animals. Kati also bought a beautiful dish from Tunisia.
A day well spent.
A similar story but with a different demand from the king, who is unhappy and wants to give/trade her daughter to the person who will fulfil his odd wish, which I don't think can be full filled, but we will see it later if it got filled or not.
The widow sent his younger son to find what the king wants, so that his son marry the princess and they can live a happy life, because when his son marry with the princess, he will become prince and they will have a lof of money.
But his son was not wise, he should have helped the poor man that came in his way, may be he was sent from god to help him, but he talked with him harsly and didn't gave him food. may be if he gave him the food, he might had helped him.
Now he wonder here and there for 100 days but couldn't find what he was looking and he returned home with the 100 goads.
That's great. You have bought some precious gifts for your family and friends.
Dish is also looking very beautiful and childrens enjoy alot.
If we talk about the story, I must say these are folk tales and fascinating stories with no truth in it.
We have read this type of story previously where three sons of widow wants to save the life of king's daughter and also wants to married with her.
In this story, end will be same like that one.
Honest person will marry with her and he became the true man who owns the hundreds farms of king.
They will built that ship or discover it?
Here comes another interesting story. The kind must be seriously in need of The Ship Walking on Land, for he was willing to marry his daughter out to anyone willing to provide him with The Ship Walking On Land.
The eldest son of the widow failed on his mission to get The Ship Walking On Land because he was rude and greedy. He was greedy up to the extent of not wanting to share a piece of his black bread with the poor man and that led to his downfall.
This serves as a lesson to those who are greedy and rude to strangers, or those who don't like helping their neighbours who are in need.
I have never heard of a Christmas Market before, I am just hearing this for the first time. It really sounds nice though. Just a place you go to get gift for your loved ones.
This one reminds of the "three orange Apples" a tale I read from you too.
I sure know how this is going to end having already read the three orange apples. It was the last son that finally brought it because he was good and he was specific about what he wants.
Now, in this tale, the first son was actually rude to that poor man. I hope that the second one gets the Ship walking on land but my instincts tells me that the second son will as well follow his elder brother's steps.
The socks you bought looks cool, I love the design on it. It is good thing to see the kids happy. Happy Sunday to you
The ship walking on all fours, on Land would be a very interesting sight to behold. I don't know what would make the King desire something like that, that he's even ready to pay a whopping seven hundred farms as dowry for his beautiful daughter.
Then the eldest son of the widow sets off on a quest to find the walking ship, but with his kind of attitude, I knew he wouldn't go far at all. After one hundred days, he came home with a hundred useless goads. What a pity!
I'm looking forward to the subsequent episodes to know how things unfold.
The socks you bought for your grandchild is beautiful, so also Katie's dish. It's good you still had fun today, especially after the long journey.
The king wants to offer his beautiful daughter to any man who could provide him with the ship walking on land just to satisfy his desire.
Wow!
The poor widow's eldest son got goads and missed to get the ship that walks on land.
He may be lucky to marry the beautiful princess if luck eventually shines on him and he gets any such ship.
Will the king still offer the poor boy his beautiful princess if he finds out the boy's poor background or would the boy's talent and ingenuity cover for his poor background?
Let's find out together!
A pair of very good socks for Nathaneil is a good presence as winter is here!
That was thoughtful of a good grandpa.
Regards.
This one is very funny to me, where would one get the ship that sails on Land? Well with folktales, anything is possible. The unhappy King must have a particular reason for wanting that kind of ship.
The eldest son of the widow is not wise at all because he did not discern that the poor man asking for alms could actually be the key to achieving his dreams. Well, he failed and returned home to his poor mother. I'm sure that in the next chapters, the other two sons would give it a try.
You had fun with Katie's grandchildren and I particularly liked the dish from Tunisia
Now it would be necessary to define in what year this happened, a ship that walks on land, it is a difficult task, in any case the man started very badly by denying some bread to the poor old man, as it has happened in other stories every time this happens, the person who acts in bad faith, simply does badly in what he does.
Definitely, your statement makes me think the same thing, that it was a great day, that makes me happy for you.
It seems that we are facing another Gascony tale with an obsessed king and a mother with three sons.
However, this time the first son is unsuccessful in his mission.
I am intrigued to find out how the story will unfold and what will be in store for the rest of the characters.
There are sure to be many lessons and adventures to be discovered in this folk tale.

This picture which the artist has made is very beautiful and the story of today's is different and very interesting because till now we all have not seen such a boat which has its own legs and that city. But this king wants something like this and he has been working hard for it for a long time, so now he doesn't get it, so he wants everyone else to find something like this. So it makes a proclamation here in the whole city that whoever brings something like this I will marry my daughter to him.
There lives a poor mother who has three sons. Hearing this, the mother is happy and says that you have to go this way and find him first, she sends her eldest son that you will do this first because you are the eldest, then he wants. How many months does he spend? On the way, he meets many people and they ask him what he is doing, so he tells them all these things, and some people even ask him for food, so he has Nothing happens so it cannot give to people. Now it is to be seen that after spending so many months, his son has been born, has he got anything or is it also a failure.
Children are very happy to visit such places to see such animals.
Firstly the task given by the king is kind of a difficult one. Which is why he said he would be giving anyone who found the ship walking on land a seven hundred farms.
But for a poor woman to send her son,it means they are desperately in need of money.
She then sent the eldest son for the task.
But I wouldn’t blame the eldest son for not giving the old man the little bread he had because that was the only means of survival for him.
But I wish he gave the old man the little bread which might have helped him get what he wanted.
He tried his best though.
I hope the rest of her sons finds the ship walking on land.
It’s such an interesting tale.
I wonder why the King will be requesting for a ship that is walking on the land. Maybe the King has seen something like that before so he wishes to have it for himself and maybe it is very much important to him but I’m sure that he will get the ship he wants.
At the same time, I wonder why so many Kings always want men to do some tedious tasks before they hand over their daughters to get married to the man who does what the King wants. At the same time, if the eldest brother has given the poor man his loaf of bread or just a little of it, he might have going the ship walking on land.
I wish to see what will happen at the end of the story but I have a feeling that the last boy will be the one to accomplish the goal since the first boy has failed and I don’t think the second boy will be able to succeed as well.
The King was too obsessed with that Ship walking on land, for him to stake his daughter's life (marriage). Sadly, he chooses his self wish than the happiness of his own blood and flesh. On the other hand, the young man (eldest son of the widow), poor effort to have that ship is predictably a failure due to his lack of hard work and a good heart for his fellow men.
I am looking forward to reading more and finding out who will win the beautiful princess's hand (heart as well). hopefully a kind-hearted young man. 😇
The man might be wondering what does it mean with the request of a ship most especially when it comes with a ship walking on the land. It must have really been difficult to actually find a man that will give him that satisfaction because the demands he is actually requesting for is actually so high to follow. I strongly believe the man must have really desire that ship to the extent of even offering his only daughter to be the Ransome for anyone who can deliver it. That is to show the desperation of the needs to be met.
I will say the mistake the young man is not actually telling the man his needs genuinely and not only that but not treating the poor man with love and humility as expected. That is the danger in it actually.
