THE STONES OF PLOUHINEC
Waiting

Bernèz kept his word and arrived at the agreed place an hour before midnight. He found the beggar carrying a double bag in each hand and another hanging around his neck.
“Come,” he said to the young man, “sit down there and think about what you will do when you have money, gold, and precious stones at your discretion."
The young man sat down on the ground and replied:
"When I have the money at will, I will give my sweet Rozennik everything she wants and everything she has wanted, from linen to silk, from bread to oranges."
"And when you will have gold as much as you want?" added the wizard.
"When I have gold at will", continued the boy, "I will make rich all the relatives of Rozennik and all the friends of her parents up to the very limits of the parish."
"And when you finally have gems in abundance?" the old man finished.
“Then,” cried Bernèz, “I will make all the men on earth rich and happy, and I will tell them that it was Rozennik who wanted it."
While they were talking like this, time passed and midnight arrived. At that very moment, there was a great noise on the moor and they saw, by the light of the stars, all the large stones leave their places and rush towards the Éthel river. They descended along the hillside, crushing the earth and colliding like a troop of giants who had drunk too much; They thus passed pell-mell alongside the two men and disappeared into the night.
Then the beggar rushed towards the heath followed by Bernèz, and, in the places where the large stones had stood a little before, they saw wells filled with gold, silver, and precious stones which rose to the edge.
Bernèz uttered a cry of admiration and made the sign of the cross; but the sorcerer immediately began to fill his double bags, listening towards the river.
He finished loading the third, while the young man was filling the pockets of his canvas jacket when a dull murmur like that of a coming storm was heard in the distance. The stones had finished drinking and returned to take their places.
They rushed forward, leaning forward like runners, and smashed everything in front of them. When the young man saw them, he stood up and exclaimed:
"Ah! Virgin Mary, we are lost!"
“No, not me,” said the sorcerer, who took the grass of the cross and the five-leaf clover in his hand, “for here I have my salvation; but a Christian had to lose his life to assure me of these riches, and your bad luck put you in my way; therefore renounce Rozennik and think of dying."

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.
I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.
Bernèz and the beggar/sorcerer waited until midnight and saw the stones going to the river to drink.
They then saw the gold coins and precious gems that were under the big stones and got as many as they could.
When the stones came back, Bernèz saw his last hour coming, which was confirmed by the beggar.
Yesterday, we went to the "dyke" near the Pitt River. The dyke has been created to avoid flooding the lowlands near the river.
It is a pleasant walk. When the weather is good and not too cold, you see plenty of people walking and biking on the dyke.
You can also see some mountains in the background.
And yesterday, we also saw horses. It was far from us, but I am pretty sure that the riders were practicing dressage.

Unfortunately, Bernèz was not able to enjoy the coins and gems he had obtained for long. It seems that his time in this world was coming to an end. The beggar/witch confirmed his fears and it was a sad moment for both of them. Sometimes the most precious things come to us when we least expect them, but they can also be fleeting.
Will the story continue?
Beautiful photos.

I knew for a fact that Bernèz will not forget going to meet the begger because he has unfulfilling dreams like that of marrying Rozennik. I was just smiling when Bernèz' was just pouring out what he will do with his wealth, in every of his sentence, he never failed to mention Rozennik's name. But I guess the begger doesn't really care about Bernèz, all he wants is the treasure. He is selfish! Or am I the only thinking this way?? He is just using Bernèz to get at the treasure. I just hope he proves me wrong. I am certain nothing will happen to Bernèz even though he got terrified when the stones came back, of course that was trouble for him. All my hope is that, nothing should happen to him and he should have his own share of the treasure.
It's a good thing you to a walk especially in such a cool weather. A walk in such a weather is very pleasant. That's when you get to feel all the breeze of nature.
That's great that you like walking.
Its very beneficial for health. I also like it but only when the weather is good.
Lake is looking very beautiful and overall the view is awsome.
Nowadays weather is quite harsh as winters has arrived and its foggy here. Wakeup early in the morning is a great and difficult task.
Winters vacations has announced and all looking lazy and days are quite boring when there is no sunshine.
If we talk about the story,
Its seems that beggar was very nice as he doesn't wish to have money for itself.
He wanted to please her and her relatives and parents.
It shows how we love someone so that all relationships connected to this guy became lovely for us.
However now the end is here, waiting for that.
Finally the moment have arrived and the treasures which Bernez and the willy sorcerer have been seeking are before them. Bernez is happy and thinks he has found the riches that will enable him marry his intended, but it's a trap which he realises too late when the sorcerer tells him so. A good Christian soul, Bernez is at risk. What will happen? Will the sorcerer succeed in his evil plans or will salvation somehow come to Bernez and rescue him? The answer may seem obvious but let's wait and see.
This was a good story and I enjoyed it. Thanks for translating.
What a refreshing walk down a dyke in nice weather. Looks like your place where you reside has a beautiful environment as I can see from the pictures of the dyke.
God bless and goodbye, @vcelier.
One thing that actually act as safe guard is that Bernèz arrived early which is actually a good thing for him though. This particular question
"Come,” he said to the young man, “sit down there and think about what you will do when you have money, gold, and precious stones at your discretion."
I will say that is the question every of our youth in our present generation need to ask of. I have noticed that every youth is desiring to be rich and rich but the truth is none of them is not actually or aware of the purpose of the wealth and like they always say, if the purpose of something is not known, abuse is certainly inevitable. Well back to the story, I will say the young man actually know the purpose of the wealth and has plan for it. Not only that but also want to plan it well. Not everyone will actually want to make other fellow men in his society to be rich.
Bernèz has his whole life centered around Rozennik to the extent that he was ready to give everything to her, her family or at her bidding.
Bernèz and the beggar have collected the gems but the stones are back and a Christian's blood has to be shed, which is likely to be Bernèz's but I have this strong feeling that he would be saved from the calamity.
The road is very good for long walks, reflecting along the way. I can see you walking, your back to the camera. Nice pics.
Today's story was very sad and I myself have become very sad because the way a person thinks if it is not right, then there is trouble and he even fell in love with her now but she did not love him. For this reason, his life will remain sad for the rest of his life and he will spend his life in troubles. Meaning whenever it happens, people stop saluting after benefiting in the same way and this is where the custom of the world is going.
If you want to have a good and healthy life, you have to walk every day, and it is a fact that when it is not cold, a person goes out, meets new people, has a lot of fun.
Those huge stones floating would have been a sight to behold. Even more so the mounds of riches beneath them. It is a big curious that the Sorcerer was already finished at the third bag when the stones came back. Couldn't they have stopped at the second bag and got away safely without a sacrifice? I guess riches can be blinding, and we wouldn't have a better story if they did. I look forward to what happens next, and if Bernez will survive or not.
Everything happened exactly as the donkey and the ox had discussed, they both filled their bags and pockets with the precious coins. Now the die is cast! What would happen to Bernèz, would his blood be shed? Would the beggar escape with all that riches? The next episodes would answer these questions.
It's indeed a pleasure walking along such a quiet road, in good weather condition. I hope you had a great outing?
As midnight strikes, Bernèz and the beggar witness a spectacle as the stones rush towards the Étel river, unveiling hidden wells filled with gold, silver, and precious stones. However, the beggar's delight turns to dread as the stones return, threatening their lives and prompting the sorcerer to reveal the sinister truth about the wealth acquired at the cost of a Christian's life. As in real life things that look to be too good, really are not.
I think this is the time we should remember what the ox and donkey had said before. They already predicted that this will happen and it is looking like that already. Also, I would not blame Bernez for going back to the beggar since that is what every human is going to do especially for the fact that they are talking about wealth and it is possible for them to become rich along the line. But I noticed two things which are very obvious here.
The first thing I noticed is Bernez love for Rozennik. This is really pure and it is very much obvious because all he has been saying was her and it is obvious that he is trying to make wealth because of her so he could have enough money to take care of her.
It is also obvious that the beggar does nit even care about Bernez. He is so stingy and I just hope that nothing bad happens to Bernez. I’m sure he’d be fine and also scale through. I just wish to know how this will end
