The Propulsion System of the Corvette Georges Leygues
While the Frigate Tourville had a very standard propulsion system for the time: two fixed-pitch propellers driven by two steam-turbine engines, the propulsion system of the Corvette Georges Leygues was quite novel.
There were two propellers, but they were variable-pitch ones and they were driven by diesel engines or gas turbines.

A variable-pitch propeller is one where the angle of the blades around their long axis may be controlled to change the blade pitch.
An advantage of a variable-pitch propeller is that different speeds for the ship may be obtained with the same number of revolution per second for the drive trains.
A vessel with a variable-pitch propeller can accelerate faster from a standstill and can decelerate much more effectively, making stopping quicker and safer.

With a steam engine, the number of revolutions per second of the drive trains may be as slow as needed. This is not the case for diesel or gas-turbine engines without an inefficient coupling between the engine and the drive train.
I believe the reason why the Navy stopped using steam engines was that there were not many suppliers, while there are many manufacturers of marine diesel engines and gas-turbine engines.
Trials at Sea of the Propulsion System
The trials at sea of the Georges Leygues were done in two periods. From February to June 1978 for the propulsion system, then in fall 1978 for the equipment.

At PMP (maximal possible power) with the gas-turbines, the Georges Leygues was reaching a speed of more than 30 knots (~56 km/h).
For the "crash stop" from maximum speed at PMP to full stop, the Georges Leygues was able to stop in 1.5 ship lengths, while the specifications were a maximum of 3 ship lengths. Because of its variable-pitch propellers, stopping the ship in emergency was easily done by reversing the blade pitch of the propellers.
The propulsion trials at sea took a long time, because the propulsion system was quite new and the Navy wanted to know all of its characteristics, including the most efficient way to use it at various speeds.
After the second period of trials at sea in fall 1978, the Georges Leygues was ready for its Long Crossing (TLD in French) in February-March 1979.

The propeller though not noticeable when a ship is on water does a magnificent work in fact it is one of the vital part of a ship. No wonder the navy want to know the characteristics of the propeller, the efficient way to use it at various speed. Thanks for the story.
Engine discovery is one of the amazing in transportation field. But i think steam engines wouldn't have standed in modern times also because of the time needed by the engine to run as compared to diesel or petrol. Also the portability and handling issues would hv beem there. But from energy point of view it is far ahead then diesel or petrol engine
Yes, that is mostly true, but steam-turbine engines are still in use in nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
Yea they still run and i really wouldn't mind their use. They dont waste your natural resources and they can be affordable. But only thing is are we people of this generation really ready for it. But i really dont have react idea right now about the values generated by steam engine as compared to other two. What efficiency they have have? I think there efficiency might be a problem Sir?
My brother was one of the first crew on a newly commissioned ship and as such he was designated a 'plank owner', which these days is kind of an honorific. Was there anything like that for you on the Georges Leygues?
No, there is no specific designation for the members of the first crew of a French Navy ship.
I'm not sure that duty on a newly commissioned ship is a lot different than one that has been in service for some time so it seemed a little over the top for there to be a first-crew honorific but my brother seemed to think that it was worth mentioning a couple times. Maybe because it was a new class of ship. Perhaps it was something that the Navy raises to importance for the sake of moral.

It marvels me how the engineers behind this were able to put up something so amazing in the 1970s considering the technology level and civilization timeline at that time. This propeller system is truely wonderful.
The 1970s were not the Middle Ages. Many of the technologies we are using now were already invented.
I am quite aware of that fact. But I still feel these men deserve our commendation. Engineers today have far more to work with compared to the ones who birthed these things 48 years ago.

I wonder if there were political reasons for switching to diesel and gas? Maybe oil companies were supporters of whoever was in charge? It must have been awesome to be able to try out new technologies all the time between new engines and new computers.
Why would the oil companies care? The steam-turbine engine were already using oil products to produce the steam, and not coal.
My mistake. I thought steam engines were coal based.
