It has been 5 days since I joined and I know I haven't done as well as many others, but I am not going to focus on that...I am just thankful to those that have encouraged me with my art and enriched my experience with their posts. I am looking forward to seeing more from you and I hope you enjoy what I have to offer :)
I painted this picture for a guy I know and he ended up backing out of the commission, which was pretty disappointing to me. I decided not to let it get me down and a couple weeks later, someone came into the Art Gallery where I have my art at. He was desperate to find a present for his mother and said he wanted something that was inspired by native culture. This painting was originally done for a native man and so I had not displayed it at the gallery, because I didn't want anyone to think I was trying to appropriate native culture. I told him I might have something at home for him and showed him this picture. He excitedly yelled YES this will be perfect! He bought it on the spot and I mailed it out to his mother. I was very happy to help and even more happy that my painting was going to go somewhere to be appreciated and loved. Everything happens for a reason, if you stay positive and focused...you can turn anything around!

I actually don't believe in luck so much. I like to think that things happen and it is how we handle such things that make or break us. Even the worst things can be channeled into good if the intention is there. Things that appear lucky can sometime turn out to be not so great. It is how you choose to perceive them and what you decide to do about the things that happen in our lives <3

Don't worry much about comparing yourself to others on here. Especially at the beginning there is always some component of luck...being at the right place at the right time to have the right person see your work. And unfortunately, this isn't something we can control...it just happens when it does.
However...putting out fantastic work and sharing your soul post after post absolutely moves the odds in your favor! I have no doubt you'll see things pick up for you on here. Have you seen the @steemgigs or @steemshop by chance?

The short answer is...to a degree.
Curation rewards are essentially split among ALL voters on a post, however there are many that earn less than the required minimum of 0.001 Steem (Power, technically) meaning they don't receive any reward.
For the remaining voters, the 'cut' of the 25% curation reward is split, weighted by the Steem Power of each person. Technically also the percent vote given by the slider bar as well as their vote power % which goes down as you vote. So you do deny curation rewards for the piece you would have gotten. If your Steem Power is low, the bigger voters get a MUCH larger portion which they will still receive whether you had self voted or not.
The last thing to mention is that there is a curation reward penalty percentage applied for votes cast before the post is 30 minutes old. (This was a way to incentive people to read and protection against early bots.) So you voting, the moment it's posted means you would have a 100% curation penalty. A vote at 15 minutes would have a 50% one, and at 30 minutes or more there is no penalty applied.
What's lost by this penalty is forfeited to the original author (which is you.) So the 100% curation you could have gotten is given to you. Often because of this penalty, the curators cut is between 15-20% instead of 25%.

Thank you :) I don't think it is bad, I just can't help but look at those that have gotten 400/700+ ...holy fuck how did you do that? in the same amount of time time! I am happy with the turn out, I just didn't want to brag about my numbers when I know that there are others out there doing it so well lol
I can't imagine getting that many is the norm. I just barely cracked 100 after a month. I think those who get that many followers are bringing them in from elsewhere. There are bloggers who have large followings and they are likely bringing their entire following here.
