So I finally bought succulents. I've been looking at these trendy suckers for what seems like years, and somehow always assumed I just wouldn't be able to care for them. Today, I got some starter plants, some containers for planting, the proper soil mix to hopefully help them thrive, and some decorative containers for when I'm comfortable to transfer them again, or I get some to propagate.
That's my first completed succulent planter, and I let my 4 year old spearhead one as well:
I won't lie, I absolutely messed with his to make sure the plant was secure after he went back downstairs. I love the kid, but a little unknown meddling won't hurt.
As far as I've read, the easiest way to breed/propagate really any succulent is to use leaf clippings. Some people recommend precise cuts with a sharp knife on a strict care timeline. Others just say to tear off a leaf and throw it on some dry soil until it starts growing another plant. I'm trying multiple methods. Some leaves I cut, some I broke precisely at the stem, and others are a bit more haphazardly torn (alright, I accidentally broke them off).
So after the "wounds" harden up, I'll split them into two groups. One group I'll lightly spray with water however frequently (I'll figure that out based on how often I remember to do it). The other group will just stay dry, and I'll see if something eventually happens.
I've got high, optimistic hopes going into this, so throw some luck my way, and I'll be sure to document!
