As I was tidying up my plants yesterday, I noticed that one of the new mesembs I bought on Sunday had turned a little yellow on the bottom leaves and I wondered what it was up to. This morning, the sorry state of affairs is plain to see - the shark's teeth has succumbed to rot. The yellow bottom leaves and the slight wrinkling at the lower part of the uppermost leaf tell me that the plant is busy turning to mush inside.
The sad thing about mesembs is that when that happens, there's no saving them. Some plants can be salvaged by taking a sharp knife and removing all rot and allowing it to re-root but with these, it's automatically a goner and the recriminations and post mortem analysis can begin: "was it too hot? too cold? Should I have refrained from watering it?"
These are normally very easy-going plants so it's a surprise when one decides that the shock of moving is too much for it, although it's actually inevitable that you will lose one occasionally. I also see, on closer inspection that the plant had a few scale insects on it so perhaps it was just in a weakened state.
On the bright side, the babytoes hasn't died yet and we are on to day four so I live in hope. One day at a time...
I hope you don’t give up. Next batch could be just fine. Could be a cat! 🐓🐓
Not giving up anytime soon! It happens with mesembs
Very sorry ... I wish to you his sprouts survived! But, sometimes it's not our fault. It happens that we buy a plant with a problem that can not be seen right away.
I have one, but not yet bloomed. And, in general, development is very slow ...
They are very slow
:-)
Oh no. That is a real shame.
Losing the odd one to rot is inevitable when growing mesembs :(
These flowers are very similar to marine plants. Beautiful.
Just too much moisture in the air can do this :(, but when turning colour to yellow is usually too late for this plants anyway... anyway we live and learn I guess, have a nice evening :)
Sadly, yes. Have a good evening yourself
I didn't get why it died :( it's like it decided to commit suicide omg
They do that. Succulents can be incredibly tough but when they rot from the inside, it's all over in a day or two
How fustrastrating! Its hard to pick sometimes what was the underlying fault.
es hermosa primera vez que veo algo asi
Hoping my transplants survive as well.
Growing is so exciting isn't it!?
It is, but I just hate it when they rot
You poured your heart on the dying plant.
Its like that sometimes.
Am enjoying your updates, quite rear.
