4 ways to make sure you pick the right degree subject

in #summer6 years ago (edited)

If you’re currently in sixth form or college and are hoping to attend university within the next couple of years, it’s time to start thinking about potential degree subjects. This is an exciting time for young adults, but it can also be a stressful one. How do you know you’re choosing the right subject, and where do you start with narrowing down your options? Thankfully, there are a number of things you can do to help you decide.

Find your passion

The best place to start when considering which degree subject to study is with your interests and passions. If you’re someone who has always known what you’ve wanted to do, that’s fantastic, but it’s not uncommon for students to be unsure, and that’s okay too. Take some time to think about what you love and are fascinated by – do you have a talent for writing or a love of history? Do you have a passion for space exploration? Do you thrive most when you are helping people?

Think about the subjects you have most enjoyed throughout your time at school and use these as a starting point. You should also think about your academic strengths to help you decide, looking at how you might be able to translate those skills into your future studies and career.

Think about your future

What do you see yourself doing after university? This is an even bigger question, but it’s one that you have to ask yourself when deciding what to study. If you desperately want to be a doctor, you’d of course have to study medicine, but if you would like to work in a field such as the media or creative industries, you could choose from subjects such as English Literature, Journalism, Media and Communication, Film or Marketing. If you’re not entirely sure what you want to do after university but have a keen interest in a specific subject, look into where this could take you to help you decide.

University open days

Open days will give you the opportunity not only to explore the campus and location of a university, but to learn more about the courses on offer, too. There’s no better way to understand a degree subject than to hear about it from the lecturers themselves, so if there’s a specific subject you think you might be interested in, attend a university event to find out more. You’ll also get the chance to meet current students and can ask them questions to get a better feel for the degree subject and what it’s like.

Summer school

Summer school is a way to test the waters and experience for yourself what it would be like to study a particular subject. Immerse Education’s Cambridge summer school is a great example of such an initiative, offering young adults a chance to partake in two-week programmes to get a feel for a degree subject as well as university life on the whole. The award-winning programmes are offered amidst the surroundings of the University of Cambridge, with students living and learning in the inspiring colleges of this prestigious institution. Each course offered at the Cambridge summer school is led by expert tutors who have taught at world-class universities, who will help you hone your skills and decide what is best or you. This is a fantastic way to ease anxieties and be certain whether the subject you’ve been thinking about is right for you.

However you wish to approach that next phase in life, the key is always to stay calm and don’t panic. Get the best advice you can from those around you but never feel that your next steps are pressured or forced. After all, it’s your future.
