Hi Nina - such a great post. What youactually burn are the essential oils. They remain i the glands of the leave, quite on the surface.
In bay - and in iny laurel - there are monoterpenic and oxide ingredients, these are quick molecules. But in thruth - all essential oils are highly inflammable (this is why they dont want you to fly with them).
By burning you release the essential oils in the air indeed, but i prefer to vaporise them; its much cleaner and has a better result.

My goodness these posts are so interesting and I am learning so much more about the technical side of using the herbs. Awesome @dutchess for the info on vaporizing the leaf. I will do this next time I am in need.
