Riding the waves at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz can be an extremely risky proposition.
Steamer's is a world-famous surf spot due to the great waves that crest right alongside a rock cliff that juts out into the surf zone.
If you're not careful though, one wrong cut can send you right into the side of the jagged cliff-face or into a large rock at the base of it.
On top of that, great white sharks inhabit these cold Pacific waters of the central California coast, due to the elephant seal breeding grounds that are located just a few miles north. Sharks love elephant seals for dinner.
For photographers, Steamer's also offers plenty of opportunities for near misses. If you're late to the shutter release button, you just might miss that perfect "decisive moment".
I hope you enjoy!
