You may have a lot of dreams in your life, but in the end the ones that count are those that become reality and make a difference.
We've been working a couple of months on this project and today we finished the last of the three first surf events. It's been a quite overwhelming moment to realize that everything turned out to be successful.
My current emotional state: completely fulfilled.

Everything starts with the belief that you can do it
In Lisbon my presentation about 'Dreams of the Ocean' received an amazing feedback.
I really didn't expect that.
There were so many people celebrating the idea and starting to think about additional concepts. That was really inspiring!
Besides the personal encouragement in conversations there were a lot of considerable donations sent to the account @dreamsoftheocean. It's money that will enable us to go ahead with the project which is really a fantastic outlook.
However, there's also been some backlash against charity on steemit in general. Some people believe that any initiative that requires a power down is counterproductive for the development of the platform, thus not worth being promoted.

Here's my take on the importance of charity: every initiative or project that promotes Steem(it) outside the Steem eco-system helps to increase the value of this platform and its currency. Also: if we were only here to generate profit and social commitment wasn't estimated at all, then we couldn't call this a 'social' community anymore.
Is that what we want?
Talking about numbers: I'm pretty convinced that the promotion we've done for steemit.com during our events so far, is worth much more than the money we needed to cash out in order to finance the activity.
Maybe the next time we will present the media value created in newspapers, in other social networks and on websites outside the steemian eco-system. That would be surely an eye-opener and the winning argument :-)
But enough talking...

Yes!!! There were some kids repeating the session yesterday, and they're already really good at it!
I would love to organize much more of these activities and help them to live their new hobby :-)
I am also considering to see if I can come over next summer for a few days to join for one of these sessions and maybe grab a few waves with you...

@surfermarly there will always be nay sayers, donβt let those miserable bastards get you down. This @dreamsoftheocean initiative is amazing and the joy brought to these children is worth more than the few STEEM it took to make it happen. I truely believe that @dan would applaud this as a great use of the platform he created. I think this has the potential to grow into a global phenomenon of surfy salty joy for kids in need.

I'm totally with you, and also my intention has always been to promote the platform, spread the word and make it available to more people. I'm not sure if there are many more people that are more 'annoying' to the people in their environment in that context than I am :-D
I guess that the value of these advertisements would be far beyond the expense of the activity.
So I'd like to close that chapter. Also: independently from what other people think about this ininiative, I would go ahead anyways :-)

Detractors will always be there, so which one is gonna be? Powering down to fund initiatives that help people and market the platform? or powering down to individuals's empowerment and independence?
Aren't they enough reasons for the creation of Steemit? The former i think is way better for the steem eco-system.
I think as long as we promote the platform to potential new users, a power down will always be nicely balanced. What's a new user on steemit worth? There has been an article published on steemit about that a couple of months back: The value of Steem and its users
Considering that calculation, bringing a new user to the platform would be worth much more than cashing out 1,5K in order to finance a charity project.

Although I am based in London, what I do want is to be based in the Philippines to make it happen in a nearby area in my place. If this is not feasible sooner, our Steemit Philippines in the provinces can start this once we have sub-groups in places that do surfing.Hey Marly...I will definitely work on having @dreamsoftheocean in the Philippines. Believe me when I say that we have a couple of surfing sites now all over the Philippines. My @steemph Steemit Philippines family is aware that this can be one of the projects in the future...having members now on SNDBOX, the possibilities are endless.
The only question in the Philippines is on when we can start this Marly, it will happen.

Totally with you on making steemit work outside of the community. What a cool way to teach these kids how to have fun in the waves. I think more ideas like your should be brought to light amongst the steemians. Hope to hear more about future projects.
