Yeah, I'd heard mention of parallel constructions in the past myself but have only recently become aware of how these methods are actually used. Really scary stuff.

it doesn't seem that long ago that government agencies required probable cause and a legal warrant to eavesdrop on us. Now they eavesdrop on all of our communications and movements so as to collect data and via covert means get other agencies to do the very illegal and unconstitutional dirty work.
You're right - most people doing the dirty work eg police officers, DEA etc probably have no idea how the data was collected. They are probably just given a 'lead' to follow or a task to carry out.
Proving that the alphabet agencies collected data on me (should I be prosecuted) looks like it would be very hard to prove. Yep, very scary stuff my friend.
