I couldn't resist some of the delicious confections served up by Ambala Sweets, in Drummond Street, last time I was in Euston.
Badam barfi, for instance, is a creamy sweet made from almonds, like fudge but better. You can have fig halwa, like Turkish delight made with figs and pistachio, or the sweet, sticky curlicues of jalebi covered in syrup.
There’s carrot halwa (gajar halwa) like a slightly spicier version of carrot cake – and equally moist and moreish. Or my favourite – pista barfi, coloured a luminous green and tasting of pistachios and cream.
Rasmalai are worth asking for. You’ll have to buy a whole box – the little round milk sweets are served floating in creamy sauce. A delightfully different way to finish off dinner, although possibly not helpful to your New Year’s resolution to lose weight.
While most of the Ambala sweets are traditional, there are a few innovations. Chocoholics will be pleased that they can buy barfi dipped in chocolate – the best of western and eastern traditions combined!
