Ficus Benjamin and my Swiss dream!

in #switzerland20 days ago (edited)

On October 1, 2024, I stepped out of Basel Airport and was greeted by Spartak, a pleasant guy with green-hazel chameleon eyes. Our acquaintance began long before we met in person, and for a long time, 2,500 kilometers separated us. Until the very last moment, I wasn’t sure I would actually land on the soil of my dream—Switzerland!

Around August, I brought up the idea of meeting him and asked for his help in buying a ticket from Moldova to Switzerland, as my financial situation was quite challenging after closing my business a year ago. On September 5, we bought a ticket from Chișinău to Basel via Rome. Hooray! I couldn’t believe it!

But a week before departure, the Rome-Basel flight was canceled—not just delayed, but entirely removed from service! I was left with a ticket covering only half the journey to my dream destination. My finances were in shambles, and asking him for help a second time felt awkward. At that time, I was temporarily renting a room from a friend in Chișinău and selling off the remnants of my business assets, which had supported me throughout the year.

In that rented room stood my 1.5-meter tall Ficus Benjamina, which I had grown over 12 years from a tiny branch with just a few leaves. Here, I should mention an old story: 12 years ago, I was living in Chișinău and working at a glossy magazine. In our office, there was a massive ficus, about 2 meters tall and wide. Our office photographer taught me how to grow a plant from a cutting, and I “borrowed” a small branch from the office ficus.

A few months later, I moved from Chișinău to southern Moldova for 12 years. During that time, the ficus grew, fell ill, lost its leaves, revived, and moved with me from one apartment to another. Most recently, upon my return to Chișinău after 12 years, the ficus traveled with me in the front passenger seat of my Honda, where half of it got sunburned in just 30 minutes. I brought it to my friend’s apartment and spent two months watering, spraying, trimming, and removing the dry leaves. Slowly but surely, it came back to life and grew into a full-fledged tree.

Honestly, I planned to stay in Switzerland and didn’t expect to return to Moldova anytime soon. By October 1, 2024, I needed to fit my entire life into a single suitcase. Naturally, I thought I would just give the ficus away or throw it out. And then something magical happened!

An idea randomly came to me: why not sell the ficus, just like I had sold everything else? I listed it in a Facebook sales group, and what followed was absolutely shocking! Within an hour, I had 40–50 people calling and messaging, competing to buy my Ficus Benjamina.

I thought to myself, “If I can sell it for €80, I’ll be able to buy tickets to Switzerland!” And I did sell it! Oh my God, it was unbelievable, considering I was about to throw it away. I couldn’t believe it until I actually saw the money in my hands! What’s more, two customers were practically “fighting” over it!

After the sale, I immediately rushed to the bank to deposit the money and buy my tickets. On October 1, I landed in Basel, unaware that the most romantic Swiss story of my life was about to unfold...!![]
