So I recently commented that I could not see any serious competitors for Steemit emerging any time soon. I may already stand corrected. I had heard of Synereo around the same time I discovered Steemit. Up until now, the only thing I've seen of the Synereo platform are convoluted conceptual/ technical videos more interesting to backend coders than end- users.
That changed today.
Today the Synereo team have released a video demonstrating the Alpha release of the platform. I have to say it looks great. Slick, clean interface. Notifications. Ability to invite and connect with other users. Attach pictures directing from your computer. Tags. Everything you'd expect and more.
Take a look:
Is Synereo serious competition for Steemit?
It certainly looks like the battle of the blockchain-based social media platforms is heating up...
Very interesting video. I welcome the competition.
With respect to code quality, steemd may seem to be "monolithic", but most of the features used by steemit.com are optional plugins. It is possible for exchanges and currency users to run with only 15% of the memory usage and much less CPU usage.
Good to hear you welcome the competition.
I'm guessing people will not truly get to see the power of Steem until other applications emerge (beyond Steemit) that leverage the Steem protocol.
Steemit has the first mover advantage, and thus far they have been incrementing at a rapid pace. There will be a bunch of competitors who will try their best, but it's going to boil down to two or three successful ones. Steemit has the Reddit-style platform locked up though - others would be best off trying something different.
Synereo does look great though - but a demo is a demo.
I take your point about a demo being a demo... as they say the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.
I think first mover advantage will be crucial. Steemit has a chance to lock down the market before some of these other projects get off the ground. I do think they are slightly different propositions. It will be interesting to see if Synereo can scale.
Certainly - there's scope for different types of social networks. Steemit has got the Reddit-style platform covered. Synereo does seem to be a slightly different twist. What worries me though that they are several months away from launching a website. Their whitepaper is dated all the way back to March 2015, and they are only now showing a demo. A pretty similar story with Akasha - I have been hearing about for many months now, yet they have nothing to show for it.
The idea of a blockchain based social network is a popular one that has been around for years, but it's only Steem that have gone ahead and actually implemented and executed it. It remains to be seen how it will scale in the long term, of course.
Steemit really needs to roll out invites, profiles and secure messaging as soon as possible. The lack of these three things are a big liability right now - without them, a competitor could scoop the crypto-social-media crown pretty quickly. But if the devs roll out a nice Facebook feature set there is nothing stopping Steemit from replacing Facebook.
I expect a great completion!
I think what synereo and steemit can coexist.
It was believed to contribute to the expansion of distributed social application .
It certainly looks good but certain advantages are on Steemit's side. But time will tell. We will have to wait and see.
On another note, it is obvious that many different blockchain based social media platforms will emerge. That's how it happens in every field. And that is healthy for everyone! :)
Ok, and what do you think about Yours and Decent networks?
To be honest, both appear to be lagging a long way behind Steemit at the moment.
Decent - I've commented on in the link in the OP.
Yours - looks like a bitcoin tipping site. I've just seen a barebones demo however their offering already seems superseded by what Steemit has to offer. Also Steemit has little/no barriers to entry for crypto newbies. Yours requires curators to have or purchase Bitcoin to get started tipping people. I also cannot see the social aspect on the site.
Having said that it's still early days and one or both of these platforms could spring a surprise.
Thank you for the info.
Yup guessing this for a few weeks now.
my first post was something about synereo.
maybe there will be a comptetion !
I guess it will be hard to get attention to it here, if it will become a real competitor.
I watched this lack of interest for competitors in other networks like reddit.
I don't think the Steemit community will stick it's head in the sand when it comes to competitors. I'm definitely invested in this platform yet have one eye open on what's happening in the space generally. We all should. To be in a silo is to quickly become irrelevant.
From what I've seen so far the Steemit team and community have been quick to respond to challenges and suggested improvements. I believe "we" will respond positively to competition. In fact a 'rising tide lifts all boats' (as the saying goes). I can see both platforms feeding off each other and growing, if Synereo is up to the task.
I hope so :). i am not against competition and i even advocate it.
I really like Steemits society growth so far and it would be nice to see its community handling competition in a positive way.
Synereo will definitely be competition.
Comparing the source-code for both platforms, Synereo seems to have a competitive advantage for a number of reasons. One, its made in Scala which is certainly more readable than C++ which steemd is built on. Two, transactions are more abstracted than Steem. Steemd seems more coupled to the functionality of steemit. for example, the "trending" and "popular" categories are part of the steemd api. This seems to me like an application implementation, not a blockchain daemon function.
I am closely watching both and will be excited to see how each platform grows.
Interest what you day about the source code. I don't know enough technically to comment either way on the validity of what you say. However I do know that sometimes 'technically superior' products don't always win the day. There are other factors, timing, marketing, network effect etc., that tend to trump the product.
You are right, it will be interesting to see how this develops.
Good point, I was checking their site yesterday and had the same thought; their crowd-sale is in September...
https://steemit.com/money/@rd7783/synereo-price-analysis-btc-amp-on-poloniex
But I thought their token was already released... what's the crowdsale for?
You can already buy Synereo AMP tokens on the major altcoin exchanges. They have more AMP tokens in reserve I think, for the upcoming crowdsale.
Hey! Thats cool! Competition makes everyone better. I think there are many factors but, it really boils to which monetary system is better for the user. In that respect, Steemit has the advantage of jumpstart capital. Long term, I think the most used platform will be the platform which maintains a 1:1 content volume:currency value ratio.
Synereo looks fantastic. Its crowdsale values AMPs at 126K. It has the advantage of immediat asthetic appeal (for). Say...how much are AMPs again?
Who on earth will buy AMPs at 126k in a crowd sale when they can buy it now at 18k on an exchange??... Sounds like a ploy to instigate a pump (if true)... do you have a source for this?
No no no. In total. 126K capital into AMP. https://blog.synereo.com/2015/05/10/amp-distribution-complete-2/
Ok I misinterpreted.
That article makes things as clear as mud!
Twice as many distributed than sold due to error? 45m distributed differs from the 185m on coinmarketcap. Not to mention the Sept crowdsale coming up.
very confusing
Interesting, very interesting.
How many of you will sit on two seats?
This looks like a very good platform as well in my research, but of course it's not launched yet so who knows.
Yeah Steemit definetally has the advantage so far though! Maybe once it is up and running I will join them as well and post my stuff on both sites that way I am diversified!
competition is good for quality. bring it on
