The army has made big progress in the fight, state television said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based observer organization, said the Syrian forces took control of some buildings in the densely populated area.

Among the IS-controlled areas, there are parts of Al-Kadam district, Al-Hazrat al-Aswad and Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk.

The footage broadcast on state television showed that the tank of government forces is moving ahead with an open area on the edge of the IS-controlled area; Unarmed soldiers are moving forward on the damaged road, thick clouds of dark smoke on their heads.

The sound of flying rounds and shells exploded around, continuous shooting of a light weapon and the sound of a heavy explosion was echoing.
