How long does it take from when you click on "follow" after someone's name that you are allowed to see their content? I am "following" four people, but my feed says that it has nothing in it.
Does uploading images to my profile do anything? I can't see them.

Depends on if they posted anything, how long ago, as feed pages keep moving, scrolling the oldest off the page quite quickly.
Are you saying you uploaded a pic for your avatar and cannot see it? You are trying to add it from an url, not from your Hard Drive?
Random gen pw only for the very first time you use steemit. Then go to Wallet - Permissions and get the Active pw and the Posting pw (active needed for transfering of funds etc).
