I'm taking you along with me as I create a new card deck for myself. I will create it with an American Indian theme as I did once before. What is Lenormand? - check out my previous article.

Card 33 Feathers

The original card was the Key which presented some difficulty as this doesn't easily transform into Native American Indian thought. They didn't really deal with locks and keys. Their doors were open (some more than others), so a "key" doesn't have any real meaning within this context, so I searched for something that had a meaning something like this:

When we think of the KEY, we tend to think of:

  • Opening doors, gates
  • Solving problems, having advice
  • Secrecy, especially that which is revealed
  • An open heart, understanding another person
  • It also means success

To me, this is the result of having authority, or achieving earlier successes to create more success. I realized that the obvious symbol of authority in many tribes is feathers... The young warrior earns feathers as he achieves success whether on the battle field or at the table of diplomacy. The feathers earned represent authority earned. The chieftain typically has many feathers - which becomes like the "keys to the village" in the same way that a mayor holds the key to a city (and sometimes gives them - ceremonially - to an honored person who is considered a friend to the city.)

So, this new card seems to fit the old one very well, especially as it also adds the trust element to the card.

For my new card, For my new card, I hit Google Images search, looking for something with CC0 (Creative Commons 0) licensing meaning that I don't always have to remember to credit someone - essential if I were to start doing paid readings with these cards.

I also had to find out which traditional playing card is associated with this card. So, here is my result:

I wanted feathers which were very obviously tribal. These ones are wrapped, ready to smudge with or add to the regalia of a tribesperson. Bundled like this, they also resemble a pair of keys on a keychain. To me, it makes a very good representation of what this card is meant to mean, both traditionally and with the new Native spin on it.

I really like the result.
