Ha, that wasn't something I noticed! In many ways I prefer it, I get so confused with the tipping and all of that.. I travel a lot for work, and I can never figure what to do, and I get so awkwardly embarrassed about it! In Australia, we never had the tipping problem..

Brits are not so keen on tipping unless it's deserved, it shouldn't be expected here and certainly shouldn't be like this. You could refuse as its not mandatory, but its devised in such a way that most people would be put off doing that.
You are right, I didn't think it would possible to refuse! In Australia, we just pay the servers properly... Although, that might be changing with the way prices have increased and wages haven't kept up...
