Brasserie Bridge (Ghent, Belgium): A Tasteem Review

Ghent (Belgium) is a town that I have visited quite often for work as one of the groups that I play for is based there. However, this time I was there with a different orchestra and was only here for a night (the concert) and in a different area of town to the place that I am more familiar with.

Thus, this was a chance to find a new place to eat. As usual, the time constraints between the rehearsal and the concert meant that it had to be something quite close by. In this case, it was just across the square from the main Cathederal!

The Space

On the outisde, there is a decent amount of seating under the covers. It is also (not shown) a nice view of the square, with the Sint-Baafskathedraal just behind the photographer in the photo above. I would say that the outside area is a touch too packed closely together for comfort, but at least there is a decent amount of seating.

The interior is more spacious, and reminds me a little bit of a Brasserie from old movies or something like that!

The Menu

t5.jpg

There is a wide variety of dishes on offer, however I was quite atrracted to the Specialities. Mussels and chips is also quite a thing in the Low Lands as well. Pricing is a touch on the expensive side, but I guess you are paying a bit for the central location...

The Food

t3.jpg

My colleague had the Stew from the Specialities, served up with a side of chips and salad. Which she said was just okay, nothing spectacular. Possibly not quite worth the price....

Meanwhile, I decided to get the Duck (my favourite!) in Pear and Redcurrent sauce served with a side of Gratin with vegetables. Again, I would have to say, it was nice, but not really worth the price! The sauce was a nice and interesting twist though, not something that I would have thought of, so some cooking inspiration for the future!

The Experience

Despite being on the early side of dinner, it was starting to get quite busy (at least on the outside, not so much on the inside). So, the wait staff were hurrying around a little bit. Despite that, the service was fast and friendly, and the waiting time for food was not so long either. However, the inside was quite empty, so I wonder how it would have held up under a full load of restaurant guests.

Menus were in English in addition to German, Dutch and French, so there should not be too much difficulty there! After all, Ghent is a pretty popular tourist spot, so the restaurants are usually quite well prepared for multiple languages.

In conclusion, I would have to say that this place wasn't really worth the price. The food was decent and the atmosphere inside was quite nice, but the prices were too expensive. There were many restaurants nearby, so I would suggest trying out a different one!

howdy sir bengy! another restaurant bites the dust! lol. Well I assume you will know to choose another one next time but then you don't know if there will be a next time in that location do you?
I guess there is something to be said about fresh locations and dining experiences! very good review sir bengy!

It is pretty likely I will be coming back to Ghent more often! It isn't that far away from where I live, and there is a group here that I play on and off with. However, this was the first time I had tried to write a review for any restaurant in this town, next time, I will know where to go! I have my old favourites to visit!

sir bengy! that sounds like a winning plan..does the orchestra company pay for your meals when you guys are away from home or do you have to pay for everything yourselves?

Depends on the individual employer... Most of the groups I play for will have a food allowance (per diem) per day that is paid to you. I can never eat that much, so I get to pocket the leftover as extra pay!

hahaha! well it's good to hear that they are so generous with that, and it's makes a nice bonus when you have money left over. My gosh do they expect you to eat at the most exclusive places in town? With the very little time that you have?

Partly it is due to me not being able to eat three large meals a day! But also, with the limited time, we often don't have the time to shop around for a good deal on food... And the last, and perhaps the most important, some groups recognise the importance of happy workers!

Sadly, others don't...

sir bengy! so you are like a free lance musician or a contractor? In other words you don't work for the same company do you? I'm not sure how that works. do you belong to one orchestra and that orchestra gets hired out by different clients?

Great review the food all looks so good

Thanks, glad it looks good! Pity I'm not a better photographer...

Your photos are great :)

Cozy ambiance.
As per the experience,.. ”charge to experience”

Thanks for sharing & more power!

Thanks for dropping by and commenting! Sorry about the slow reply...

I like the look of the place and the location, but I have to agree with you about the prices, especially if the food wasn't fantastic taste wise. Thank you so much for your review! I am hungry now... xD

Yes, the food wasn't exceptional, and it wasn't plentiful either... So I guess most of the price is due to location and the tourist premium!

FOR TSE: The presentation sure looks casual. I do a better job than this at home.

Yes, everything about it was just okay... Definitely counting on the tourist traffic!
