Indonesia has many delicious spicy food. One of it is penyetan, it means something whether it is chicken, meat, meatballs or vegetables that would fried then put in a cobek (utility where sambal or spicy chilli sauce was made) then pressed unto it.
One of the place where i ate the East Javanese penyetan was Penyetan Cok, a food stall on food court area at 5th floor Blok M Plaza, South Jakarta.
Here was the food stall
Here was the menu
The special menu was SAMBAL, all the food was served with sambal.
Here was the dining area here
It was large, had many tables and chairs, clean, neat and air conditioned. Many food stalls were also here.
The food that we ordered
The package of fried chicken, tempeh , tofu and a slice of eggplant. All was fried then they provided the sambal, it was spicy and also savory. But the sambal was unique, it was spicy, savory and a bit sour. They said it was 3 flavors sambal.
The package of meatballs, tempeh, tofu and a slice of eggplant. All was fried then they also completed it with the sambal. It was spicy and also savory. The sambal mom chose here was sambal terasi (shrimp paste sambal) which had spicy and savory flavor.
The two packages were completed with the sweet ice tea as the beverages.
We also ordered
Sambal terong (fried eggplants with sambal terasi in the cobek), fried tofu
Sambal Tempeh (fried tempeh with sambal terasi in the cobek), empal suwir (shredded meat) with sambal terasi
All the sambal was so SPICY and the empal’s flavor was savory and a bit sweet, like it is usually.
My recommendation
They had many varieties of sambal, but I recommended you the 3 flavors sambal because it had a complete flavor of savory, spicy and sour.
