Hi Tasteemians! Today, I spent time with my son and we had a great time in the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. We got hungry after all that phototaking at International Understanding Day event downstairs.
Ah Yan 亚燕Restaurant on the 3rd floor comes from Sandakan. The elder generation is running business there in the Sandakan Wet Market.
One of the most popular food in Sabah. Their signature dish is Traditional Fried Pork Kuey Teow (white noodles made of wheat flour).
Situated at the corner, it was a convenient place and many customers dine there for the signature dish.
Menu was free to view outside the shop, and it was simple, short list, in fact, as they served a limited number of good dishes.
Vintage photos were pinned up, as the vintage music accompanied us while ordering. Oldies music like 70s golden era classics, that's what I like about owners being thoughtful.
Squarish tables and stools were so 70s as well, notice also the wall - Asian retro is back!
Transparent view of kitchen was presented to customers as they worked and prepared our meal. The workers were friendly and kept smiling at me because I was moving like acrobats while taking photos.
OUR ORDERS
1. Signature Traditional Fried Pork Noodles (not Kuey Teow)
The fried pork is actually 客家炸肉 Hakka Style zha rou, meaning Chinese Hakka clan style deep fried pork. It is a special deep fried pork where it was marinated with red fermented bean curd (南于) and 五香粉 5-spice powder.
The fried pork must have crispy skin, dark brown in color.
It brought me reminiscent back to my hometown, which was popular with this particular way of cooking.
Delicious and Tasty, seriously.
2. SALT AND PEPPER FRIED CHICKEN (Side Dish)
Don't judge, I know we can get fried chicken anywhere... But this was special. It was covered with blended bread crumbs, deep fried, topped with minced garlic and onion, then coriander leaves. Fried chicken fried the right way. Yes. The photo already depicted the scrumptious taste.
3. ICEBERG LETTUCE WITH OYSTER SAUCE
No regrets, stir fried vege with lots of garlic. Yummy. No words can describe how tasty it was, except for this sentence.
4. FRIED WONTONS RM10.00 (8 pcs)
Luckily the wonton skin were thin and crispy. Filling was perfectly blended together with minced pork meat and chopped veggies.
5. RED BEAN SOUP with Dry Citrus
Usually red beans soup has full body beans, but this shop, they blended the beans so finely that the soup's texture was smooth and kind to the throat.
6. PAPAYA MILK
Creamy and milky goodness, only my son can have it. I couldn't as I am in down-diabetes program. Hehe.
Overall, I think the food are prepared in good quality and clean.
I'm recommending Ah Yin to all my friends. If you'd like to visit, please head to Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu!
