I had recently made a trip to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This was just two days after I started work with my new employment. Yeah ! They shipped me off as fast as they got me to work ! This is my first time to Cambodia and since most of the time, Cambodia is very much related to Siem Reap, none would really come to Phnom Penh unless it's for business purposes. This is after all the capital of Cambodia. With strong Buddhist influence in this country, it wasn't unusual to find so many temples and altars all around the city.
By the time we arrived, it was already 7pm as it took less than 1 hour to fly from Saigon to Phnom Penh. Imagine just how close these two countries are to each other. Our colleague from Somerset Norodom Phnom Penh picked us up from the airport and we were brought to a local restaurant for dinner. This restaurant serves Khmer cuisine and I've been told that it's quite famous in this city.
Inside of the restaurant
Wrapped fish in pandan leaf
Deepfried Fish Cake
Crackers with Khmer Fish Paste
Vegetable dish
Since I've never tried Cambodian cuisine before, I just followed the choices of my colleagues. The dishes are interesting especially the wrapped fish with pandan leaf. I do see some similarity on the dishes with those from Thailand. On the taste, I find Cambodian cuisine more sweeter and almost everything is BBQ or Grilled. Seeing street food stalls selling BBQ or Grilled meat is also a common thing, similar to Thailand.
For the 3 days I was at Phon Penh, I tried Cambodian cuisine once and that was it. It wouldn't be a cuisine I would crave for but trying it once is fair and sufficient for me. Thank goodness, I'm only here every three months once !
The outside of the restaurant
As for Kravanh, the ambience is simple and cosy. A bit too dim for me or maybe it's because of my phone camera. It does have a spooky feeling all around. The entrance is simple and is located in busy street with lots of street food stalls on the side walk.
Absolutely interesting cuisine. Maybe tried once and it's good enough. At least for me!
