On a lazy Sunday afternoon, bring yourself over to the pier and embark on a boat crossing the Chao Praya river. As the wooden boat encroaches towards the station, watch the uniformed men in Thai silk tie the boat to the floor of the pier, steadying the boat's motion as one at a time, we step onto the dark brown wooden boat. The boat goes straight across, beating the current, making way to the building over looking the river, with the name 'The Peninsula.'
As the boat halts, step onto the carpeted platform and head over to the towering building for a lazy afternoon tea. Enter into the lobby, a grand room with a crystal chandelier hanging magnificently over the lobby, overlooking the river where tea will be served as you tune into the pianist playing soft jazz.
Take a seat, and order the high tea set as the afternoon sunlight pours into the lobby ready for you to sip your tea and lay back in the serene air conditioned hall.
Three storeys of desserts come in served on white china plates which is placed on shiny sterling silver plates. Starting at the bottom with a heavy set of scones followed by chocolate, mousse based desserts and macarons, the set is completed with a pot of hot tea or ice cold americano. Think it's not enough? Don't you worry, as a selection of sandwiches are given on the side creating that balance of sweet and salty.
For your scone, 3 types of toppings are served on the side, butter, raspberry compote, and cream cheese, all available for refills if needed.
The best part of this high tea, personally speaking, was the Iced Americano. The glass container the beverage was served in was exquisite in taste, along with the three ice balls, of which 2 were made from coffee to lessen the dilution from ice melting.
Take a break, enjoy your tea, and posh yourself out with in the peaceful setting.
