Hello tasteemers!
Welcome to the 27th edition of Kim's Taste! This edition is about a takeaway that's so famous in Boracay. Local and foreign tourists alike, flock a small stall in an alley in Boracay where the dessert, that's good both for instagrammers and vegans, is located. Of course, when we went to Boracay two weeks ago, we haven't missed our chance to try this dessert that was so hyped in social media. Allow me to share this experience with you.
I guess we all know that Boracay made into local and international news when President Duterte ordered the closure of Boracay island for its rehabilitation. I promised myself before that no matter how good the beaches in Boracay are, I will not dare to visit the island due to reports of improper waste management and other problems resulting from poor enforcement of rules and regulations. When Boracay was closed for 6 months and re-opened again, we decided to visit the island to see how it was improved based on the reports.
Indeed, the island was so beautiful and the white sand is so fine it could get anywhere when the wind blows. At night, we stroll in their famous alleyways near the beach where souvenirs and food take outs are located. In our second night in the island, we decided to try Coco Mama's famous ice cream in a coconut shell.
Let's get this review started!
Coco Mama is located in D'Mall Palengke, Boracay. It's just a small stall along many stalls selling different food items in the area, but people are queueing just to try their ice cream. Be prepared to queue and wait for your turn to be served. You don't have to worry though as the workers are extremely sweet and they're working as fast as they could. Since it's located near a lot of establishments, it's a perfect dessert to have after meal.
Some would say that it's unique to Boracay, but it's probably not because they're also located in other parts of the Philippines. I would say that it's one of the best tropical desserts to have in Boracay.
When you're tired strolling in the beach under the scorching heat of the sun, or have gone island hopping and trying the water rides available, you will definitely want to try to cool down and have something to replenish your sugars. Try some guiltless ice cream from Coco Mama.
Coco Mama's ice cream is vegan (as it was claimed). It's made of coconut, so it's dairy-free (again, as they claimed it to be). Other ingredients are coconut strips, pinipig, sticky rice, and mango cubes. It is then served in their signature coconut shell which is eco-friendly. And that's it! That's their only product so it became a signature and a specialty.
What I love about the ice cream is how it was presented. It was simply ingenious. So you have a halved young coconut shell with the young coconut meat scraped into strips. This will form the base and container of the whole ensemble. Then two scoops of coconut based ice cream depending on your choice of flavor that's available. I chose coco pandan and coconut. Mango cubes are then added and then topped with purple sticky rice and crispy pinipig.
It was really guiltless since it was not overly sweet. I love how the ingredients have complemented with each other. Since the ice cream is coconut based, it's low in glycemic index. The pinipig added a crispy texture and the purple sticky rice provided the necessary color and sweetness. Of course, the mango cubes added a fruity goodness and tropical vibe which complemented well with the coconut ice cream. The coconut strips added a little bit of crunch in the end which is just perfect.
To be honest, I'm not an ice cream type of person. My friends would finish one whole container of ice cream, but I would just try five scoops and then I'm done. But I ate everything from the whole serving of Coco Mama's ice cream. Maybe because it was not so sweet and the ingredients are just so refreshing. I ended up scooping the last remaining coconut meat before throwing the empty coconut shell in the trash can.
As for the price, I would say that it's a Boracay rate. It was a little bit pricey for its size and contents, but it's understandable as everything in Boracay is pricey. With thousands of foreigners, mostly Korean and Chinese, it's not surprising that the rate in the island is different. For that whole ensemble, it's Php 150.00 or about $3.00. I would say it's worth the wait, it's worth it for its taste, and it's worth as an experience.
Some reviews would claim that the mangoes are sour and the coconut meat is a bit hard. I think that's just forgivable. They can't taste every mango before making them into cubes. I think they will just take a sample from a batch of mangoes and it's not assured that there are no sour mangoes in a whole bunch. The same is also true for the coconut meat. You're not assured all the time that the young coconut meat are tender. Some would just be a little bit hard, but it's not too hard as in a mature coconut.
Overall, this take out dessert is highly recommended. You should try this if you visit Boracay. If you're too conscious with your Bora body or on a diet, you don't have to break all that just to indulge yourself in that sweet treat. If you're a social media influencer, this would definitely make your instagram followers drool over your shared photos.
I guess that's all for my review. Please don't hesitate to comment anything that you want to express! Comments, suggestions, and violent reactions are always welcome. Also, thank you in advance for showing some love by upvoting this post!
