Matcha: Health Benefits and Medicinal Uses prt. 2

Although Matcha originates as a traditionally steeped green tea, in the end it’s actually a food and not a tea. You consume the entire leaf when ingesting Matcha green tea. You receive all of the added benefits that you would find in a basic cup of Sencha, but because you are consuming the entire leaf, you have the added benefits of fiber and vitamin A, C, E, and K. While you’re at it, throw in a little bit of B-complex as well.

Matcha is not only considered a superfood, which delivers energy, but nourishes and balances the entire body as well. Matcha is considered one of the healthiest forms of caffeine compared to black tea and coffee, but has a different effect on the body. The difference between the two comes down to a non-acidic liquor, as well as a substance that does not disrupt the body’s nervous system.

Some of the positive attributes associated of Matcha tend to deal with weight management, cleansing/detoxification, digestive health, depression, and anxiety, while allowing clarity from a lack of focus. You can also include management of high cholesterol and controlling high blood pressure. All of this, plus an added bonus of delivering 3-5 hours of non-stop energy, focus, and endurance.

Detoxification – One of the most powerful substances within Matcha that allow for the body to detox is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives the leaf it’s verdant green hue, as well as eliminating both chemicals and heavy metals within the body. Match is very rich in chlorophyll due to the shade processing of the tea, which I covered in prt. 1.

Concentration & Focus – Matcha is rich in L-Theanine, an amino acid that promotes a state of relaxation and well-being. L-theanine creates alpha brainwaves, which lead to a state of relaxation, while the beta brainwaves cause an excited, more agitated, and stressful state. This is the main chemical difference between coffee and tea. Coffee has straight caffeine that forces the hippocampus region of the brain to release all of its feel good chemicals, mainly dopamine and serotonin. Chemically speaking, tea has an added bonus of not only containing caffeine, but the added benefit of L-Theanine. Think of the receptor site being a lock and caffeine and L-Theanine being the key. Well, L-Theanine is the same key shape as caffeine, so while the caffeine is opening receptor sites, L-Theanine keeps them shut. It’s a balance, or Yin and Yang within the body.

Weight Loss Support – A recent study has stated that consuming Matcha before a workout increases your body’s potential to burn fat by 35%. Not only is Matcha a calorie free drink, but it also boosts the metabolism and burns fat. Specifically belly fat, by an increase with the body’s thermogenesis (the body’s own rate of burning calories).

Antioxidants – One cup of Matcha has as many antioxidants as 10 cups of brewed green tea. This makes Matcha one of the greatest resources for ingesting antioxidants. Antioxidants are a chemical compound that allows the body to fight pre-mature aging and chronic diseases.

Amount of Antioxidants

Matcha – 1573

Gojiberries – 253

Pomegranate – 105

Blueberries – 93

Acaiberries – 60

Broccoli – 31

Spinach – 12.6

These are just a few of the positive attributes of Matcha green powdered tea.

On a side note. Consuming too much green tea can leech iron and folic acid from the body. Remember Yin and Yang/balance. If your body is already low in iron, then I would recommend an iron supplement before consuming green tea. If you are on blood thinners such as coumadin, you may want to speak with your doctor before consuming green tea.

I am not a physician, so always do your own due diligence and research. Once again, speak with your doctor if you are on medications.

Until next time…
