We've had to provide proof of citizenship since at least the 90's in the states, difference is after you're hired, not before. They do ask if you can provide proof.

The proof is either a passport or two pieces of id from a list, like birth certificate and drivers license.

And people will volunteer all kinds of info about themselves, even without being asked like at the parking space.
