I went and did the same thing a few days ago as well. When I started on Steemit I would follow anyone back who followed me, but it was a bad move because it meant my feed was being clogged up with some serious spammy content, I was following around 600+ people. I was seeing it all, including a couple of accounts posting some weird NSFW hentai content and stock photos masquerading as original content.

I have now trimmed my followers down to just 60 and might even go further soon. Steemit is already a pretty overwhelming place as it is, I am starting to get picky about the content I see in my feed, I have a zero tolerance for spam and I either flag it or report it to Steem Cleaners if it warrants it. You don't realise just how much shit is on Steemit until you have so many followers you inevitably end up following some of these accounts.
