Sacred Canyon - Flinders Ranges

There's no shortage of picturesque views and special sights in the Flinders Ranges. Sacred Canyon certainly fits both of those descriptions, and is a must-see for your next Flinders Ranges trip. With it's beautiful scenery, rich history, and tranquil location, you certainly wont regret visiting this amazing place.

Location

Sacred Canyon is situated only 19 kilometres north of Wilpena, and 12 kilometres from the wonderful Wilpena Pound Resort. To get there you'll have to follow an unsealed road, which is accessible to most vehicle types, though more suited to a 4 wheel drive.

At the end of the dirt road, you'll come across a sign about the engravings, and a path leading into the canyon.

The Engravings

Within the canyon are ancient engravings dated back to 40,000 years ago, which were made by the Adnyamathanha people. While the original story of these engravings has been lost through time, they still remain a spectacular sight today after all this time.

While it is allowed to take photos of the engravings, please note that touching them is not allowed, as it may cause them to degrade. Failing to comply with this is an offense as the engravings are protected.

The Walk

The path through the canyon is not very long, but is not easily accessible for those in a wheelchair, or who are unable to climb over rocky terrain. It is a beautiful walk with picturesque views that take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You'll find the meaning of tranquility as you navigate your way through Sacred Canyon.

Wildlife

As with most parts of the Flinders Ranges, the way to Sacred Canyon is filled with native wildlife. You're likely to spot many kangaroos, emus, wallabies, eagles, and maybe even a quoll on your trip here.

Take care around the wildlife. Do not feed them, as this can promote aggressive behaviour. When traveling around wildlife, be sure to keep an eye out to ensure there are no casualties.

Important Information

Sacred Canyon is located within the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. This means that a park pass must be purchased when traveling through this area.

As per national park rules, dogs are not permitted within Sacred Canyon either, with the exception of approved service dogs.

So if you're looking for something spectacular to see while in the Flinders Ranges, look no further than Sacred Canyon. It offers a sense of tranquility, natural beauty, and rich history you wont want to miss.
