Of Power and Powerlessness
This is a part of an ongoing creative writing course I'm doing at college. Read more about it below!
It’s a picture of the city, looking down from one of the peaks at Taman Tun Fuad. It’s a few minutes before sundown. I took this photo with Joel and Abel. We were sitting on a rock, our limbs dangling dangerously over the edges.
It’s a burst of emotions, looking back at the day. The deepest of all was the feeling of power. Looking down from hundreds of feet to the city, you just feel disconnected to it, above it, almost wanting to jump down and smash a crater on to it.
You feel powerful.
The city can’t touch you up here.
Look, Simba.
Everything the light touches is our kingdom.
Then comes the thrill. It can end in all but a second, the moment I lost my balance. My body would tumble through the air and the bushes bouncing from rock to rock, coming to a stop somewhere down there where it would take days for rescuers to find my lifeless body.
But what am I scared of? I’m on top of the world.
Thanks for reading! This is my piece for a quick little spontaneous writing exercise our lecturer gave us. If you are curious of how it's done, let me explain.
First, you are going to open your Camera Roll album on your phone's Gallery. Close your eyes, scroll twice and tap anywhere on the screen. The picture your finger lands on will be your stimulus. Look at it for 3 minutes, visualize and try to think of how you felt while taking the photo and how you feel seeing it again. After that, for 10 minutes, start writing down your thoughts and feelings on a piece of paper or any device nearest to you. Don't think too much. After the time runs out, read back your writing, and show it to your friends! I challenge you to do this yourself. Post it here, and don't forget to tag me!
Thanks for reading and happy writing.
This exercise is cool. If you like doing this, I think you will enjoy @mariannewest 5 minutes freewrite challenge as well. Drop by her page for the daily prompt. And drop by @freewritehouse to visit other's freewriters too. 😀
