Today I visited Sushi Zanmai to have my lunch. This Japanese restaurant is located at Avenue K Mall if you want to visit it.
After looking at the menu, I ordered the Aburi Salmon mental don, which cost RM19.80 after including the 6% Service tax.
Aburi Salmon Mentai Don, is a Japanese-inspired bowl featuring seared salmon, cod roe (mentaiko), and smelt roe on sushi rice. The salmon is lightly seared ("aburi" in Japanese), creating a delicate, smoky flavour while retaining its soft texture. Mentai Sauce is a creamy and umami-packed topping made from mentaiko (marinated pollock or cod roe), mayonnaise, and sometimes other seasonings. The sauce is slightly torched, giving it a golden, charred appearance.
Aburi is a searing technique that originated in Japan and gained popularity for its ability to enhance flavours through slight caramelization without overcooking. It's often used in sushi and donburi dishes to balance raw and cooked textures. Mentaiko has roots in Korea but was adapted into Japanese cuisine, especially in Fukuoka, where it's widely enjoyed. The roe is known for its salty, spicy, and briny flavour.
The Aburi Salmon Mentai Don combines traditional Japanese techniques with modern flavors, making it a popular choice in casual Japanese dining worldwide.
