Explaining Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrency) is the hardest thing ever

in #teammalaysia7 years ago (edited)

A lot of people asked me about bitcoin and cryptocurrency and everytime I started to explain it, I always got the same respond. "This is very complicated and I will never understand it" then what's the point of asking, right? I never finished my explaination they gave up not even half way through. I'm not an expert in cryptocurrency but through out the years I learned a lot about it because I have a very high curiousity about it. I did all the things possible with bitcoin, trading, cloud mining, using it to buy and sell things and etc... the only thing I didn't do is the normal mining. All those I did out of curiousity but along the way I learned a lot about it.

Explaining bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general is the hardest thing to do. Especially to those who already set their mind that this thing is too complicated for them to understand. Sometimes when the same person who already given me that response asked me again I just said "just google it, a lot of good explaination out there made simple and easy to understand". Not because I'm being rude or selfish but I'm tired of giving explaination that will be cut half way and I won't be able to finish it.

But recently I changed the way I explain it to those who asked. I told them that they don't have to understand the technical part of it, they just need to know how to get it, how to use it, how to trade it, how to send/receive it and how to keep it safe. That way will get most of them interested in it although some still think it is too complicated. I don't blame them, maybe they just want to know about it but forgot to open their mind and heart to understand it, common traits in most human, I guess. I know, maybe, my way of explaining it is not the correct way but it's hard.

Now, recently some friends asked about Steemit, for the first time. I don't have a better way to explain it except to ask them to sign up and try it for themselves. Not because I'm selfish or lazy to explain it but mainly because Steemit need to be explored by experiencing it. I joined Steemit in October but I left it idle for a month because I don't know what to to with it. Only recently I decided to explore it further.

So, what's the best way you use to explain about bitcoin or cryptocurrency to those who asked? And how do you make them to be interested in it so that they can understand it?

Sort:

I compare it to a fiat currency like $ or € and then I say the pros and cons of the both. It's very easy to make them to be interested.

I ever did that too but when it comes to setting up the wallet and all, they started to give up on it even before they see what I'm trying to show them.

Your suggestion of asking them to get an account and try posting is probably one of the easiest. Once they made the SBDs, it always speed up the process. Heck, sometimes the question will shift to "How to withdraw the money ah?"

I usually use the in-game currency mechanics of popular games like World of Warcraft or Farmville or Clash of Clans. As long as there are exchanges in the read world that are willing to take those in-game currencies (for example, someone may wanna buy your special weapons in your WOW game), then those digital money sudden becomes real money.

You can ask them to check out this thing call Google and Youtube too. :)

But the truth is, if they are approaching the issue with scepticism rather than curiosity, it's gonna be hard for you to explain anything to them, because they are trying to convince you that you're wrong.

p.s. @bitrocker2020 will probably give them his fountain story. It works. :)

using the in-game currency is a good idea! and yes I agree, that is what making it hard for them to understand it when they refused to understand it. The worst I've met was when they asked about it and then when I started to explain it they will condemn it even though they have no idea what cryptocurrency is all about.

I need to hear that story from @bitrocker2020 it must be very interesting :)

We can only move on.

That's a very good motivation!

hmm since you bring up this question, made me have a thought- by taking part in steemit, maybe is a good gateway for those who wanna find out what cryptocurrency is about, when they see upvote get rewarded, then they will find out more about stuffs related to cryptocurrency :)

Yup. That's probably a good idea :)
