Few days ago I was walking around Imperial palace, named Gamzigrad in Serbia. That is an archaeological site located south of the Danube river. In that place you can find everything what Roman Empire was: big beautiful buildings and spirit of power alive centuries after. That complex called Felix Romuliana, is one of the most important late Roman sites in Europe. The name Felix Romuliana was given in memory of Romuliana, mother of Roman Emperor Galerius. There is three separate places within the complex of Felix Romuliana - luxurious villa for Galerius, monument to his deeds as emperor and palace for his mother Romula. The most beautiful things are - mosaics depicting Greek gods Dionysos and Medusa, figural capitals of Hercules, baths and impressive gates.
In the entrance you start to think that you are entering in the another time and absolute different space. You leave your time on that gate because nothing from this time is not important - you have to become another person.
There is one hill named Magura, where Romula and the founder Galerius were buried and deified. These sites are considered to be saints in Roman mythology. In every stone in this place are hidden a lot of magic and mistery.
The greatest merit for discovering this palace, belongs to Dragoslav Srejovic, Serbian archaeologist. No one knew beforehand the name or purpose of this palace. He discovered in the south-west an archivolt with the inscription of Felix Romuliana. That was in 1984.
One of the gratest mosaics from the Roman period is here, but scientific says, that this is just small part of big mosaics covered by stones.
I wanted to touch the stone, because in this contact with centuries there is all the power of the past and the desire for future. All Roman soldiers were there, trembling in the glow of this rock that shone in the sun and was all the more close to him.
Thanks for reading! :)
