Life-Changing TED Talks

in #teamsouthafrica7 years ago

This was really interesting to learn. It is also the last in the series of my top 5 TEDs!

I have both a son and a daughter... and am so glad this talk passed my ears and eyes!

Boys are “habituated to take risk after risk.”

The talk continues in 1980 Carol Dercksen did research with 5th graders and difficult problems. She found that bright girls were quick to give up, bright boys on the other hand saw it as a challenge! They found it energizing! They were more likely to re-DOUBLE their efforts!

Girls tend to feel that if a problem can’t be solved, it has something to do with them... boys on the other hand don’t get emotional over it.

The speaker, Reshma Saujani mentions how students approach their professor teaching Java with these two interesting examples

Boys: “Professor, there’s something wrong with my code”
Girls: “Professor, there’s something wrong with ME!”

The difference is how girls and boys approach a challenge.

HP found that men will apply for a job if they meet 60% of the qualifications. Women apply only if they have 100 percent!

In other words, we’re raising our girls to be perfect and we’re raising our boys to be brave!

Let that sink in, give it some thought and let me know if this resonates with you!
