Other interesting facts about Jan Smuts are the following: In 1943 (as a member of the Imperial war cabinet since 1939) he was appointed as a Field-Marshall of the British Army.

Another interesting fact is that he shares the same birthplace with one of his biggest political rivals, DF Malan. Both of them were born in Riebeek-West in the Cape Colony.

IS interesting. Also his political rivals delighted in calling him Field Marshal Smuts, meaning he was more British than Afrikaner. Smuts preferred being called General Smuts.
