Huawei, a Chinese smartphone giant has become the second biggest smartphone maker by shipping 54.2 million handsets across the globe in Q2, 2018. As per the report from International Data Corporation (IDC) and Canalys, the Chinese tech company has dethroned Apple to emerge as the second biggest smartphone maker after Samsung in the last quarter. Going by the report from IDC, the Chinese company shipped around 54.2 million handsets in the Q2, 2018 witnessing a year-over-year growth of 40.9%. Samsung, the Korean smartphone company, stood at the first place with 71.5 million handsets shipments recording year-over-year change of -10.4%. On the other hand, the third position was held by Apple that shipped 41.3 million handsets, compared to 41 million in the corresponding quarter previous year.
Huawei attributed this success to its strong hold in the Chinese market, which the company leads the market with 27 per cent share. Also, the good demand for P20 flagship product too has contributed to Huawei’s success as the company has shipped over 7 million units worldwide. Other contributing factors for Huawei are Nova mid-range series and smartphone rolled out under the Honor brand. The Nova series from Huawei is very much popular in the markets like Asia and Europe.
As the fact that Huawei is banned in the US market, which has helped the company to shift its focus in the other markets and register impressive volumes. However, the victory for Huawei could be a temporary one, as the American tech giant generally does better in the fourth quarter particularly because of annual launch of new iPhones. Considering the report, the real loser here is Samsung, as the Korean company recently confirmed that the sales for Galaxy S9 device have dipped in Q2. It is also interesting to note that Xiaomi also performed well in the second quarter by shipping 31.9 million handsets with a 48.8% year-over-year change. According to the report from IDC, the Chinese brand shipped 21.4 million handsets last year in the same period. Another Chinese smartphone maker that made to the top 5 list is Oppo wherein the brand witnessed a 5.1% increase compared to last year by shipping 29.4 million units.
